Our rigorous, comprehensive program has been “approved with distinction” by Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). There are only three institutions in the state with this designation.
Students in the school counseling programs at Assumption University are educated and trained in counseling strategies and interventions (academic, social, emotional, behavioral, and career) to facilitate positive outcomes for PreK-12 youth. The needs of school-age youth have become significant with the role of technology, familial stress, academic pressures, etc. Therefore, the role of counselors in the schools has become quite expansive. Youth cannot achieve academic success if they are struggling in other domains of functioning.
Our programs have a well-defined mission focused on the tenets of social justice and anti-bias education. The faculty are knowledgeable educators and practicing school support personnel (school psychologists, administrators, school counselors, school adjustment counselors). They model the disposition and characteristics required to be an effective counselor in the schools. Class sizes are small and there are opportunities to connect with faculty and classmates. Students in the program typically coalesce and form life-long professional relationships.
