A Message from President Greg Weiner

Assumption University is a community of friends united by a common goal—the formation of our students and the pursuit of truth. The result is a unique education that is timelessly valuable for students and graduates in every sense. On this campus, they become different kinds of people and therefore different kinds of professionals, leaders, parents, friends, and citizens. Marked by gritty determination, relentless curiosity, and a lack of entitlement, Assumption graduates are in demand exactly because our understanding of Catholic liberal education knits enduring ideas and professional preparation into a single fabric. As a result, our graduates are ready for a world whose only constant—in the workplace and beyond—is change. They embrace what is timely exactly because they’ve studied it in conversation with the timeless.

So many institutions force students to choose between personal formation and professional preparation. Assumption doesn’t—because at Catholic liberal education’s best, those goals reinforce each other. Assumption students, both undergraduate and graduate, leave here with the knowledge and habits of mind that prepare them for their first jobs; their second, third, and fourth careers; and the obligations we all bear to one another as citizens and friends.

For us, that’s what it means to be a Catholic institution with an educational mission—a mission that speaks to people of all backgrounds and faiths precisely because we seek truth, goodness, and beauty wherever they’re found—whether it’s healing a patient, exploring the science and philosophy of the mind, or analyzing the numbers on a balance sheet. We believe those moments of wonder and discovery are waiting around every corner. We find them in daily life, in the classroom and the lab, in conversation and in competition.

At Assumption, everyone is both a student and an educator—from the professor in the classroom to the student in the back row, from the staff member providing academic support to the dining workers preparing our meals. For us, the virtues of learning are courage, generosity, and humility. We believe we learn the most from those who see the world differently, which is why our community of learners embraces diverse people and points of view.

Join us. Learn with us. Teach us. Challenge us. You’ll transform your life—and ours.

Assumption University students are globetrotters. They’ve studied in more than 20 countries in Europe, Asia, North and South America, Australia and Africa. Some have been awarded prestigious Fulbright Scholarships which empower new graduates to spend between nine and 10-months in a foreign country implementing a research project or teaching English while studying part-time and traveling the host country and surrounding areas.

The Assumption Way

Assumption students graduate with the knowledge and habits of mind that prepare them for their first jobs; their second, third, and fourth careers; and the obligations we all bear to one another as citizens and friends.

Your Assumption educational experience will begin with the Foundations Program. This unifying Catholic liberal arts educational experience provides the foundation for any major or professional education you work towards at Assumption and beyond.

Whether you plan to be a teacher, counselor, scientist, accountant, the Foundations program aims to help you discern the type of teacher, counselor, scientist, or accountant you want to be. You will think about what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning not just in your professional life but also in your personal life.

The Foundations Program will encourage your curiosity and provide you with opportunities for deep discussions with a community of friends exploring important life questions. You will cultivate the ability to effectively and in a person-centered way, communicate with others as you explore what it means to be a person and how to relate to others in a changing and challenging world. What does it mean to be a good friend, partner, parent, community member?

The Foundations Program ensures that you are able to apply what you learn not just in the immediate context of the classroom, but across subject matters, organizations, and life circumstances for decades after you leave campus. The dynamic interplay between Assumption’s Foundations Program and its various majors and minors is the heart and soul of an Assumption education- it is what makes an Assumption education uniquely vibrant, significant, and valuable.

Marked by gritty determination, relentless curiosity, and a lack of entitlement, Assumption graduates are in demand exactly because our understanding of Catholic liberal education knits enduring ideas and professional preparation into a single fabric.

AU PRESIDENT’S CABINET (as of Dec. 2023)

INTRO:

The primary function of a university cabinet is to recommend and review principles, policies, and rules of university-wide significance. The president seeks the advice of this senior leadership team on issues of university direction, policy, and planning, including, but not limited to: long-range planning for faculty and academic program development; strategic planning on financial, facilities, and fundraising matters; faculty and student affairs; and personnel policies and other matters as appropriate or necessary.

Assumption’s president, Greg Weiner, Ph.D., assembled a new cabinet and serves as its chair. The membership includes the provost and vice president for academic affairs, vice president for mission, vice president for finance and administration, vice president of enrollment management, vice president for University advancement, vice president for student affairs, general counsel and vice president for strategy, vice president for student success, and chief marketing officer.

When asked how he went about building his team, President Weiner — in his signature humble and humorous style — answered, “One of me is enough!” He went on to explain his plan to surround himself with people who have genuine differences of perspective, providing healthy debate but with a common commitment to the mission of the University. As cabinet chair, he purposefully facilitates disagreement in order to elicit challenging views.

Most of the current cabinet members are relatively new to Assumption and/or their positions.

“I think the personal and professional chemistry is terrific,” says Weiner. “It’s a team of people who support one another and try to lift each other up.”

Aside from sharing information, the cabinet focuses on their time together as forward-looking and strategic. Reflecting on their first cabinet retreat in May, he remembers noticing that, despite how shallow and new their personal relationships were so early on, there was a “profoundly deep and immediate connection to the educational enterprise as we are trying to conduct it here.”

In developing a new strategic plan, the cabinet has made a concerted effort to use existing governance structures instead of creating extra committees. This puts more of a burden on these leaders, but they are up to the challenge and are cultivating the same spirit of constructive and open dialogue within their divisions as they practice in cabinet meetings.

QUOTE FROM BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIR, CANDACE RACE ‘78:

I couldn’t be more impressed with the cabinet that has been assembled in the last several months. Without exception, the team is obviously engaged, strategic, and clearly demonstrates deep expertise in each of their disciplines. I look forward to working with Greg and his cabinet in our new chapter for Assumption. We are set up for success!

Semester study abroad: Assumption is very supportive of students studying abroad. In fact, a student’s financial aid award is applied to formal, approved study abroad programs in more than 50 locations around the globe. For those majoring in subjects with an explicit international focus – such as a foreign language, global studies, or international business, studying abroad is highly recommended, although not required.

Business Studies majors and minors can enhance their program of studies with extended travel abroad, acquiring valuable international business experience, and sharpening language skills. Often students are able to earn money teaching English, while learning a foreign language, such as in Japan.

Elementary Education ’24

“I am currently placed in a first-grade classroom, which I absolutely love! One of the most rewarding things about being an educator is that each day is different. Sure, some things stay the same such as classroom schedule or teacher expectations, but little minds are truly unpredictable, and you just never know what they are curious about that day. This semester, my pre-practicum experience is focused on math in the elementary classroom. When I arrive in the morning, the students are generally just finishing up story time on the carpet with their teacher Miss K. Students transition back to their seats and often begin writing in their journals, responding to the writing prompt of the day. Then, we typically transition to snack and listen to a story on the scholastic’s website, a great teacher tool that I will surely utilize in my classroom one day! Next, we complete our morning worksheet and begin our math lesson. Once math is completed the students head to lunch and I head back to Assumption for my class. My day-to-day tasks and responsibilities mostly include being an extra set of hands in the classroom. I spend most of my time walking around the room helping and encouraging students to stay on task and complete their work.”
