Michael O’Reilly ’21 always had a passion for tech. Growing up in Hollis, New Hampshire, he spent his childhood tinkering with computers and playing video games. When it came time to choose a college, Assumption University’s close-knit community and faith-based environment offered exactly what he was seeking.
Originally a Computer Science major, Michael discovered a new passion halfway through his program, when Assumption launched its Cybersecurity program. Intrigued, he decided to double major. “I’d always been interested in software engineering, but the emerging need for cybersecurity professionals really appealed to me,” he explains. “Plus, the field aligns with my values—I get to protect people.”
Michael credits Dr. Albert, head of Assumption’s Cybersecurity program, for making courses feel relevant and practical. “We had labs that simulated real scenarios,” he says, recalling Ethical Hacking and Digital Forensics as pivotal classes. Trying to stop an attack or uncover hidden files felt more like detective work, exciting and foundational for his current skills.
“Assumption prepared me to take certifications down the line. It gave me that foundation to get into my first internship, to get my first job. And it also gave me a network of other people in cybersecurity.”
Graduating as part of Assumption’s very first Cybersecurity cohort, Michael quickly landed a rotational leadership spot at Raytheon (now RTX), holding three unique technology roles in two years. His swift ascent to Principal Cyber Tactician on the Threat Defense Operations team underscores how Assumption’s program set him up for success.
“The program continues to grow,” he notes. “I see new clubs, events, and more hands-on opportunities. For a smaller school, Assumption’s engagement with cybersecurity is impressive.”
Looking back, Michael says his time at Assumption shaped both his career and values. “The community is caring, the professors are committed, and the coursework and labs prepare you for real situations” he reflects.
Whether fending off cyber threats or offering advice to family members, Michael embodies Assumption’s ideals—using talents in service of the greater good. And he encourages anyone interested in cybersecurity to dive in: “Cybersecurity might look intimidating, but if you love problem-solving and want to make a difference, Assumption is the perfect place to start. Don’t let the technical side scare you.”
