At Assumption, the pathways offered through the study of economics or global studies are as diverse as the interests of the students we serve. You can study the world of finance with internship opportunities from Worcester to Wall Street to London. You can tackle the vital policy issues of our day from climate change to struggling urban schools. You can take on a world view, studying international economic issues or choose a broader interdisciplinary approach through global studies. From rural unemployment in India to the assimilation of Poles in Lithuania, our students have produced first-rate research projects resulting in placements in top graduate programs and Fulbright opportunities. The department is large enough to offer the kind of variety our students seek and yet small enough so that we will know you – your strengths your goals --- and we will help you get where you want to go.

The Assumption experience is about developing critical intelligence through a liberal arts education while also learning the practical skills that help prepare students for a professional life. The economics program fits this mission perfectly. Economics by its nature emphasizes logical thought progression and requires the ability to think analytically and effectively communicate one’s findings. Students gain practical knowledge about how individuals and companies make decisions and about how the economy works. However, the study of economics is much more than that. Students will think critically in order to participate in class discussions and effectively argue through written form. They will learn to build their own statistical models and interpret their findings. The opportunity to develop such a broad skill set is what aligns economics with the mission of the College.
