Assumption University Launches Social Work Degrees
Worcester, MA—Assumption University today announced the launch of Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work degree programs. Following the closure of Anna Maria College, Assumption will offer the only campus-based BSW program—and the only MSW—in Central Massachusetts. The programs will begin this fall by welcoming students and faculty from Anna Maria while entering a period of candidacy for accreditation with the Council on Social Work Education.

The addition of the social work programs enables the University to continue expanding its leading role in the field,” said President Greg Weiner. “Graduates from these programs will fill critical gaps in the workforce, pairing essential skills and knowledge with a shared commitment to the common good. We look forward to providing a pathway for Anna Maria students to complete their studies, and to offering these exciting opportunities to current and future Assumption students.”
Assumption’s Bachelor of Social Work program will prepare students for generalist practice, utilizing a holistic approach and emphasizing strategies for ethical practice, advocacy skills, and respect for human dignity. The program will feature a strong field placement component, with students completing a 100-hour internship during their junior year and a 400-hour field placement during their senior year—ensuring graduates are well-equipped to enter career paths in public and private agencies.
Assumption BSW students, and graduates of any CSWE-accredited BSW program, will have the opportunity to complete an MSW through an Advanced Standing pathway, saving up to a full year of graduate study. The MSW program prepares advanced social work practitioners for careers in clinical practice, case management, child welfare, substance use services, family services, nonprofit leadership, and other areas of social work practice.

Bates, who received a Master of Arts in clinical counseling psychology from Assumption in 1990 and an honorary doctorate in 2021, serves as President and CEO of Open Sky Community Services—one of the largest human services nonprofits in Central Massachusetts. “Assumption is helping ensure that future generations of professionals are prepared to meet some of our community’s most complex challenges with skill, compassion, and a commitment to service.”
