President Greg Weiner

Greg Weiner is the 17th president of Assumption University. Weiner joined the Assumption community in 2011 as an assistant professor of political science. Throughout his tenure in teaching, he was promoted to associate and full professorship. Additionally, in May 2019, he was appointed provost and vice president for academic affairs. He was named president in 2022.

Under President Weiner’s leadership, Assumption has made significant strides in a variety of areas, including creating the bold vision for the University’s 10-year Thrive strategic plan; increasing first-year enrollment by 32 percent while improving retention rates; developing and implementing a Foundations program for first-year students; establishing Assumption’s Center for Civic Friendship; and securing provisional accreditation for the Physician Assistant program.

A Commitment to the Future of Assumption

In 2024, it was announced by the Board of Trustees of Assumption University that Weiner was reappointed for a 5-year term through May 2030.

“President Weiner’s leadership has been instrumental in setting Assumption University on a path of continued success,” said Candace A. McGovern Race ’78, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “His unwavering commitment to our students and his strategic approach to enhancing the university’s Catholic liberal education make him the ideal leader for the next phase of Assumption’s growth. We are confident that his vision for the future of Assumption will continue to elevate the university and benefit generations of students.”

In recognition of his dedication to Assumption students, Dr. Weiner received the Student Government Association’s “Above and Beyond” award for faculty.  He is also the recipient of Assumption University’s Paul Ziegler Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarship.

An expert in the political thought of the American Founding, Weiner holds a Ph.D. in government from Georgetown University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Brown University before coming to Assumption. George F. Will has written that he ranks “among the most prolific and profound contemporary writers on political philosophy.”

Weiner is also the author of four books: Madison’s Metronome: The Constitution, Majority Rule and the Tempo of American Politics; American Burke: The Uncommon Liberalism of Daniel Patrick Moynihan; The Political Constitution: The Case Against Judicial Supremacy; and Old Whigs: Burke, Lincoln and the Politics of Prudence. His fifth book, Politics and Limits, is under contract to Yale University Press.

Weiner has published and lectured around the country on topics such as the political thought of James Madison, the separation of powers, the presidency, constitutional interpretation, and other issues. He has published more than two dozen essays in The New York Times as well as op-eds in The Washington Post.

Before his academic career, Weiner was a political aide, consultant and writer in Washington, D.C. for nearly two decades. He served as the president and founder of Content Communications, LLC, advising members of the President’s Cabinet, members of Congress, and other political leaders. Also, he served as communications director for Senator J. Robert Kerrey of Nebraska; as campaign manager for a U.S. Senate candidate from Texas; and as deputy press secretary and staff assistant to U.S. Senators Lloyd Bentsen and Bob Kreuger.

In addition to his doctoral degree, Weiner holds a bachelor’s degree in government from the University of Texas, Austin, and a master’s degree in liberal studies from Georgetown University. Weiner and his wife, Rebecca, have three children and two greyhounds.
