Assumption University Announces the Addition of Women’s Flag Football

WORCESTER, Mass. — Assumption University will add women’s flag football to its athletic offerings, becoming one of the first schools in the Northeast to establish a collegiate program, which will start in the Fall of 2027 and compete in the Spring of 2028.
Flag football was added to the NCAA’s Emerging Sports for Women program in January of 2026, marking a significant step in its development at the collegiate level. As interest builds across the region and nationally, Assumption will help shape the sport’s emerging presence in the Northeast.
“We are thrilled to announce the addition of NCAA Women’s Flag Football to our athletic offerings,” stated Assumption Director of Athletics Eric Gobiel. “As one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, women’s flag football provides an exciting new opportunity for student-athletes to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. We can’t wait to see our women take the field and help lay the foundation for the future of collegiate women’s flag football in the years to come.”
The program will create new opportunities for students to compete as Greyhounds while contributing to an athletic community centered on teamwork, leadership, and academic achievement. The addition also supports Assumption’s broader efforts to attract students, strengthen campus engagement, and develop programs that respond to the interests of prospective student-athletes.
By joining an early group of institutions introducing the sport, the University will help build a foundation for regional competition and future growth.
A national search for the inaugural head coach will begin immediately; interested applicants can apply through the attached link. Additional information about the program, including its inaugural season, coaching staff, and recruitment opportunities, will be announced at a later date.
