Assumption University’s Master of Social Work program prepares students for advanced generalist practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Rooted in a person-in-environment framework and the liberal arts tradition, the program blends rigorous coursework with concurrent field education, so students apply what they learn from day one — not just at the end of their degree.
This program seeks to prepare students for the positions of clinical social workers, clinical case managers, school social workers, child welfare workers, substance abuse counselors, family counseling, and administrative practice through one specialization or concentration that is Advanced Generalist Practice.
Graduates are ready for practice and licensure in the state of Massachusetts and across the country as a Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW), and a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW). The program is offered through several service delivery options; online or on campus. The program is nationally accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and adheres to all CSWE guidelines.
Build the clinical skills, ethical grounding, and real-world experience it takes to become a licensed social worker — on your schedule, online or on campus.

Career Opportunities for Social Workers
- Overall growth: The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of social workers to grow about 6% from 2024 to 2034 — faster than the average for all occupations — with roughly 74,000 openings expected each year from retirements and career transitions.
- Clinical and mental health roles are growing fastest: Mental health and substance abuse social work is projected to grow around 10%, and healthcare social work around 6–8%, making these the highest-demand specialties for MSW-level clinicians.
- Child, family, and school social work remains steady, with growth of roughly 5% and continued demand tied to child welfare and student support needs.
- Salary: Entry-level MSW graduates typically start in the high-$40Ks to low-$50Ks nationally, with hospital and government roles trending higher — often in the $60K–$68K median range — and earnings rising further with clinical licensure (LCSW/LICSW) and specialization.
