Few moments in life, like scoring the perfect goal, are truly unforgettable. When Greyhound soccer standout Kian Charris ’27 found out he was going to experience the World Cup first-hand, he felt that same rush.

“It was definitely one of those surreal, heart-stopping moments,” he said. “This major global phenomenon was coming to a stadium that has been my home—it was just so special to know that I’d be involved.”

Since 2025, Charris has worked as a developmental coach with the New England Revolution, mentoring the next generation of soccer players at the team’s academy, of which he is a graduate.

“This is everything to me,” he said. “I was once in their shoes, coached by mentors who had a profound impact on my life. Now I get to do the same for other young players.”

Gillette Stadium, where the Revolution play, was selected to host seven World Cup matches between national soccer teams, including France, Scotland, Norway, Morocco, and Ghana.

During the tournament, Charris had an experience young soccer players dream about. He was one of the few academy players and alumni chosen to play with members of the French team when their coach, Didier Deschamps, arranged a practice with Les Bleus players who hadn’t seen much playing time in their first match.

“I’m very grateful for that moment. It motivated me to keep striving for my dreams. Watching players of that caliber up close, you realize it’s not just the talent that separates them; it’s also their professionalism, attention to the tiniest of details, IQ, and intensity.”

Charris was also offered the opportunity to work for FIFA in fan operations, ensuring an incredible experience for visitors to Foxborough.

“From the roar of the crowds, chants all game long, the smiles and tears on so many faces…there were countless memories I’ll never forget,” he said. “My favorite part was seeing supporters from both nations together as they left the stadium, chanting together, taking pictures, and swapping jerseys. There’s so much unity and love for the game.”

The 2026 World Cup is not one that Charris, or his fellow Revolution Academy alumni and players, will soon forget.

“This is a reminder of how far this game can take you. You have to enjoy every moment along the way,” Charris said.
