Assumption Prof. Provides Worcester Businesses Key Tools to Thwart Cyber attacks
Assumption Cybersecurity Professor and Director of the Cybersecurity Center Raymond Albert, Ph.D., recently presented to area business leaders at a virtual meeting of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce. Prof. Albert’s lecture, “Protect Your Business from Hackers,” served to educate the business community on the importance of cybersecurity.
“Businesses need to remain ever vigilant of cybersecurity threats and approaches to defend against them and protect their customers and company assets,” said Prof. Albert. “Business email compromise attacks have been on the rise so knowing more about them and how to defend against them has become crucial.”
Prof. Albert’s presentation focused on a demonstration of the tools and techniques hackers use to steal user authentication (login) credentials. “Studies report upwards of 83 percent of users share login credentials across the accounts they own, this opens a door for hackers to commit business email compromise (BEC) and related attacks that cost businesses billions of dollars annually,” he added.
The event was part of the Worcester Regional Chamber’s Seminar Series, which, according to the Chamber, are offered throughout the year in order to “provide unique professional development opportunities around top areas of business, including customer service, marketing, social media, and sales.” The Chamber enlists the help of experts and thought leaders for these workshops and seminars that invite discussion regarding best practices on a particular topic.
Prof. Albert was joined by Steve Lettery, account manager for Cinch I.T., and Jennifer Rumbolt, regional operations officer for TD Bank, who explained phishing and social engineering as well as business vulnerabilities and actions that can be taken to better secure their business operations.
