For as long as people have had walls, we have put marks on them. In this talk, environmental graphic designer Kayla Schwartz presents typography’s power to shape civilization and the long human habit of making meaning visible: from cave paintings to cuneiform, moveable type to road signs, the “I Voted” sticker to the ballot itself. She shares student work from her new course, Design for Civic Engagement, which centers the work of Corita Kent—the artist, educator, nun, and activist whose exuberant screenprints turned supermarket slogans into arguments for peace and justice in the 1960s—around the objective of increasing civic engagement through nonpartisan typographic activation on campus.
