Pierre’s is Officially Open!
After years of planning, preparation, and permits, a dream that started as a student proposal has finally become a reality on Assumption’s campus.
A large crowd of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and trustees all gathered for the official opening of Pierre’s last Friday, February 9th for an evening full of food, drinks, and entertainment. The pub officially opened at 4:30pm to the community, with greetings from President Greg Weiner, Dean of Student Engagement Sara Swillo Muckian, and even Pierre the Greyhound himself.
Patrick Sedgwick, a member of the class of 2023, brought the proposal to President Weiner during his junior year, and subsequently worked with the Student Government Association (SGA) to pass it through many levels of administration. After two years of working on the project, Sedgwick’s proposal has been realized in the Hagan Campus Center.
“It’s been so cool to see the whole dream come together,” said Sedgwick. “It’s finally here and it’s unbelievable. Everything came out so beautiful, and I’m so excited to share it with everyone.”
“Today is an extraordinary day,” said Weiner. “The reason it is an extraordinary day is because of this man [Sedgwick]. This has been student-driven from the very, very beginning…I want to thank Patrick, I want to thank our trustees who believed in this project, who made it possible.”
Along with Sedgwick, other alums and members of the Student Government Association who helped push the proposal through many stages until it was finally approved were honored with a plaque in the center of the lounge.
“I’m just so incredibly excited to have the pub on campus,” said Julia Tardugno, a member of the class of 2024. “We’ve been trying to make this happen for a while now,, so just to see it come to life in real time has been really exciting for everyone on campus.”
“I’m really glad it opened before I graduated, because my friends and I were really looking forward to it,” said Amanda Tebbetts, a member of the class of 2024. “It’s just easier than going off-campus and safer than having to worry about Ubering home or driving at all.”
The space features both high-top and low tables, seating areas with couches and comfortable chairs, a full bar, multiple TVs showing both Assumption and non-Assumption sports, a stage with a DJ set-up, an air hockey table, a piano, shuffleboard, and many card and board games. Students took advantage of all of these amenities throughout the night, participating in lively games of both air hockey and shuffleboard as they enjoyed the new space.
“I’m so excited, standing in the grand opening of the pub on campus. It’s beautiful and we’re so happy to see it come into fruition,” said Molly Tempesta, SGA President and member of the class of 2024. “I’m excited to just gather in a community with my fellow hounds and to just spend time in the company of friends.”
The pub will serve drinks on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 7:00pm to 11:00pm and during special events. Pierre’s will also be open as a student lounge during Hagan’s normal hours of operation. Students of all ages are welcome to enjoy Pierre’s, even when drinks are being served, however a government issued ID and student ID must be presented to purchase drinks on pub nights.
