Students take an art course at Assumption University.

Assumption students Madison Piehler ’25 and Katelyn Prive ’27 both had their art selected to be showcased in ArtsWorcester’s 21st Annual College Show. Their art, along with pieces from students at other local colleges and universities were displayed at the Davis Art Gallery from February through April.

Both Piehler and Prive entered their work for consideration in the show as a part of the Drawing II course offered in the Art and Music Department.

Piehler’s piece “Eldritch Flower: My Drawing II Final”

Piehler, a graphic design and music double major, had one piece selected for the show, titled “Eldritch Flower: My Drawing II Final,” which she says drew inspiration from another piece she had created.

“I had to make a collage, and I put together a flower-type thing,” she said. “It was really cool, and I wanted to make it again for this project.”

Prive, an accounting major, had two pieces selected: “Grid Extraction” and “Still Life Grid Extraction”.

“I had to take items and find something in common with them,” she said. “From there, I had to zoom in on details and make the items unidentifiable. I had to blend them to make them connect and flow into each other.”

Prive’s first piece, “Grid Extraction”

Piehler was drawn to art from a young age, having started playing instruments in the fourth grade. She turned to drawing when she decided she wanted something to supplement her music degree, and her advisor suggested graphic design. She enjoyed the courses she took in the field, leading her to declare her double major.

Prive found art through a studio art course at Assumption, making her rethink what she thought traditional art courses would be like.

“I really liked my professor for Studio Art I, Professor [Tyler] Vance,” she said. “The course was so critical, like looking at art as a science. I had never taken a skill-based art class before, and I realized it was really fun and analytical. I wanted to keep doing it and learning more skills.”

Prive’s second piece, “Still Life Grid Extraction”

Both students were surprised and excited when their pieces were chosen for the ArtsWorcester show, due to their relative newness to the art space.

Prive, in addition, is excited to be able to share part of herself in a new and exciting way.

“My whole life, I’ve done a lot of sports, and a game or a track meet has been how you show that you did something, that you’re good at something,” she said. “I had never shown people my art or had it been noticed that I had done well with my art – the show was a way for me to do that. And it was so awesome to see how many people cared about art, and how many other students were there.”
