Announcing New Leadership in Public Safety

An email message sent to faculty and staff on December 10, 2024:

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Operations Lieutenant Rebecca (Beckye) Gagne, Deputy Director for Public Safety and Campus Police, has been appointed Chief of Police at Assumption University, effective January 2024.

Beckye’s exceptional breadth of experience and her student-centered approach to leadership have earned her the deep respect and trust of our students and colleagues alike. With more than 20 years in law enforcement, including 12 years of dedicated service at Assumption, Beckye has continually demonstrated her commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for our entire campus community. She has been an essential leader in sexual assault prevention, survivor advocacy, and leading impartial, thorough and trauma-informed investigations. She exemplifies the ethic that everyone at Assumption is an educator.

As a certified EMT and firefighter who also serves as Deputy Chief ofthe Holland, MA Fire Department, Beckye brings a wealth of expertise to her new role. She has completed the FBI-LEEDA Trilogy Series, was a 2016 recipient ofthe Spirit of MAWLE award from the Massachusetts Association of Women in Law Enforcement and exemplifies the values of community policing and student engagement that define Assumption’s mission. Chief Steven Carl shared, “Chief Gagne is a proven leader who has demonstrated her dedication and loyalty to the Assumption community. The University could not ask for a better individual to serve as Chief of Police.”

This transition comes as Chief Steven Carl, Associate Vice President for Public Safety and Chief of Police, retires at the end of this month after more than a decade of extraordinary service. Chief Carl has been a transformational leader at Assumption, building trust and collaboration across campus, and positioning the University as a local leader in emergency preparedness. His leadership has been defined by an unwavering commitment to the safety of our entire community, welcoming student feedback, and prioritizing education. His outstanding efforts leave a legacy of care and accountability.

To celebrate Chief Carl’s remarkable contributions and wish him well in his retirement, I invite you to join us for a retirement celebration on Thursday, December 19, from 3–5 p.m. in Pierre’s Pub. Refreshments will be served, and a cash bar will be available.

Please join me in congratulating Lt. Gagne on her new role and in thanking Chief Carl for his years of service to Assumption University. I look forward to seeing many of you at the celebration on December 19.

Sincerely,

Greg Weiner, Ph.D.

President
