An Important Update
An email message sent to Assumption students, faculty, and staff on December 31, 2024:
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
I am writing to share news that you may have read about in a recent media story. Earlier this month, the University filed criminal charges against a group of students after a thorough investigation into a report of deeply troubling behavior.
This behavior the charges describe was abhorrent. This was not a prank; it was a crime. It also violated Assumption’s deepest values. As a Catholic university, we are committed to the truth that every human person is made in the image ofGod and is imbued with inherent dignity. The victim deserved to be treated with that dignity. Every member of our community, as well as guests we welcome, does as well.
Our campus police, working closely with other University offices, acted swiftly upon the report of the behavior. They conducted a thorough investigation, with the utmost concern for the victim, leading them to file criminal charges against the students involved. In addition, the University has initiated its own student conduct investigations, and disciplinary processes are underway.
While we are unable to comment on the specifics of these ongoing cases, I want to make one thing abundantly clear: Assumption University is committed to ensuring a campus environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Violence and misconduct in any form have no place in our community.
This incident reminds us of the critical importance of our shared responsibility to uphold the values that define our University. Let us work recommit ourselves to treating every human person with dignity.
Sincerely,
Greg Weiner, Ph.D.
President
