Assumption College to Join Nationwide Live Event on China

Assumption College will join 95+ locations across the United States, with a few in Greater China in hosting an event as part of the 12th annual CHINA Town Hall on October 9, featuring a webcast interview from former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Ph.D.  Secretary Rice will speak from 6-6:45 p.m., followed by a discussion with Director of the Taiwan Studies Workshop at Harvard University Steven Goldstein, who will address attendees at Assumption. The webcast and local lecture will be held in Kennedy 112 on the Assumption College campus, 500 Salisbury Street.

China’s emergence as a global power, its role as a major trade partner amid recent frictions, and its potential as a collaborator on key U.S. global policy initiatives ensure that U.S.-China relations will affect the lives of all Americans for decades to come. The CHINA Town Hall will help audiences around the country understand the challenges and opportunities of what has been characterized as the most important bilateral relationship of the 21st century.

Secretary Rice served as the 66th Secretary of State, the first African-American woman and second woman ever to hold this position. From 1989 to 1991, Secretary Rice served on President George H.W. Bush’s National Security Council and was the senior director of Soviet and East European Affairs. Secretary Rice is the Denning Professor in Global Business and the Economy at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and professor of political science at Stanford University.

Local expert Steven Goldstein was the Sophia Smith Professor of Government at Smith College. Prof. Goldstein’s research focuses upon Chinese domestic and foreign policy, with an emphasis on the relationship between mainland China and Taiwan.

This is the seventh year Assumption has participated in this national event, which is hosted by the NCUSCR and sponsored locally by Assumption College’s Department of Business Studies. For more than 50 years, the National Committee on United States-China Relations (NCUSCR) has been the leading national, non-partisan, nonprofit public affairs organization devoted to building constructive and durable relationships between the United States and Greater China.
