Lecture: Reading the Bible Ecologically. Beginning at the Beginning…

Jan. 21, 2020
10:00 PM - 11:00 PM
La Maison Salon

Drawing upon a close reading of Genesis 1, the Ecumenical Institute at Assumption College will present a lecture by Rabbi Ellen Bernstein titled, “Reading the Bible Ecologically Beginning at the Beginning,” on Tuesday, January 21 at 5 p.m. in the La Maison Salon.

According to Rabbi Bernstein, many are surprised at the Bible’s ecological vision. This lecture will provide a new appreciation of the Bible’s profound understanding of the workings of nature and our human place in it.

Rabbi Bernstein established Shomeri Adamah, the first national Jewish environmental organization in 1988. Since that time, she has taught and written extensively about Judaism and ecology. Rabbi Bernstein is the author of a number of books including Ecology & the Jewish Spirit; The Splendor of Creation; and The Promise of the Land: A Passover Haggadah. She serves as rabbi at Hampshire College.

The Ecumenical Institute at Assumption provides a forum for reflection and discussion of questions of common interest to Christians and people of other faiths. The Institute examines the differences between Christians and issues confronting all believers, in particular, the relation of faith to the modern world.
