Assumption Prep Reunion

Assumption Prep coat of armsAt the turn of the century Fr. Thomas Darbois, A.A., Fr. Isidore H. Gayraud, A.A., and others left France and traveled to Worcester, Massachusetts, to open a high school and university for the sons of French-speaking immigrants. They purchased a three-decker home on Fales Street and converted it into a school, which became Assumption Preparatory School and Assumption University. The doors opened in 1904 under the direction of headmaster Fr. Isidore.

Assumption Prep (originally known as Assumption High School) grew in size and reputation. The alliance with the University brought the Prep School prestige and guaranteed a lively intellectual climate. At its height, the Prep School’s enrollment exceeded 400. After a tornado destroyed the campus in 1953, the University was re-established on Salisbury Street, while the Prep School was rebuilt on the original site. Times changed, and in 1970 the Prep School closed. Since then, Assumption University has welcomed Prep graduates as part of its extended family.

The annual Prep Reunion scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2020 has been postponed to the Fall 2021. Additional information will be forthcoming.

The Prep Presence at the University

The Preservation of Assumption Prep School

Alumni of Assumption Prep School were instrumental in providing funding to obtain, restore and display around campus 12, 15' by 7' feet stained glass windows that once hung in the Chapel of the former location of the high school and College. The beautiful windows, originally designed by a French artist in 1950, now stand as a lasting memorial to the Assumption Prep alumni on the Salisbury Street campus. The windows are displayed prominently on campus in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, Testa Science Center and Tsotsis Family Academic Building.
