DESCRIPTION:Abraham Lincoln is justly known as a proponent of the rights enshrined in the Declaration of Independence. But he understood these as entirely compatible with the system of majority rule encoded in the Constitution. In this lecture\, President Greg Weiner\, a political scientist and author of Old Whigs: Burke\, Lincoln\, and the Politics of Prudence\, will explore that compatibility and what it means for our understanding of these issues today. \nThis event is sponsored by the President’s Office.

DESCRIPTION:The United States Constitution was signed on September 17\, 1787\, and in honor of that day in American history\, the Political Science department hosts an annual Constitution Day lecture on or near the anniversary. This year’s speaker is Dr. Matthew Spalding\, and he will be talking about his new book\, The Making of the American Mind: The Story of Our Declaration of Independence. We will have an official response from Noah Laren ’24. This event will be held on Wednesday\, September 23\, at 5:00 p.m. in the Curtis Performance Hall. \nThis event is part of Assumption’s year-long series celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, Striving for Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
