Primary Responsibilities:

  •  Gain an understanding of the interfaces between the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and the organization’s administration and employees
  • Create marketing and promotional strategies to remind employees of the EAP services
  • Collect up-to-date information for clinical databases
  • Expand the mental health provider referral bases
  • Assist in the development of policy and process for the destruction of client records


Blog Entry:

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) at UMASS Medical School is a free and confidential program providing consultation, assessment, intervention, information and referral for employees and their household members. EAP professionals use specialized knowledge and expertise about human behavior and mental health to maintain and improve the productivity and functions of all employees. In addition, EAP also provides consultation and training to management and Human Resource staff to minimize the impact of stress on the workplace.


As in intern in EAP, I use my verbal and written communication skills, which I have acquired as an Organizational Communication major, to effectively perform my many tasks.I have gained an understanding of EAP responsibilities and have seen how significant the program is to achieving a motivated, productive workplace. Some of the areas that the EAP offers assistance includes: emotional and mental health, alcohol and substance abuse, anxiety, depression, domestic abuse, grief, and work related issues. From my experience, I see how emotionally involved clients are with the EAP programs because of the support they are given by the EAP professionals, which helps them to achieve their personal and professional goals and obtain a more positive outlook and lifestyle.


I have had the opportunity to meet with professionals in other Human Resource departments to understand their responsibilities and tasks, such as training, compensation, benefits, and recruiting. The EAP team is providing me with a valuable experience which has opened my mind to a potential career in the this field.
