At the American Cancer Society "Hope On The Slopes" event

Name: Kayla Machado
Hometown: Attleboro, MA
Major: Marketing
Minor: History
Internship Sponsor: American Cancer Society (ACS)

Primary Responsibilities:
My focus as a marketing intern at ACS is on the development of a new event called Hope On The Slopes. My primary responsibilities include: recruiting participants, securing donations, assisting with presentations for the event, and helping run the event. In addition, I have been working with the Assumption College student committee for the upcoming Relay for Life event on campus.

Blog Entry:
The biggest impact that I have felt from my internship work was attending the Hope On The Slopes event this past weekend. Until this point, my work was mainly tedious, behind-the-scenes jobs that didn’t really seem to be going all that well. After sending hundreds of emails and making several follow-up phone calls, I wasn’t exactly getting an overwhelming response from local schools and other groups to sign up for the event, or from businesses willing to donate. This made my first couple of months at ACS somewhat frustrating because it seemed my efforts were going nowhere and the event was looking at imminent failure.

Attending the actual event – Hope on the Slopes -  made me see just how much of a difference I really made in planning a successful event! Donations arrived that I was unaware we had received, and participants that I never heard back from had registered!  There we were -  at 8 am – ready to hit the slopes. It became clear that my work really had paid off in the end!

In this sense, I learned a lot about how things work in the business world from my experience here at ACS.  I found that it is certainly not easy to make things happen, they don’t happen right away, and oftentimes, things will fall into place. I found that I had to make good use of my knowledge in marketing in order to draw as much attention as possible to the event and to ACS.

My internship has provided me with a valuable opportunity to become involved in a new field –  a nonprofit organization – and explore the marketing world from the nonprofit perspective.
