Personal Bio:

I earned my undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. I have a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Indiana University and a Masters in Teaching (Biology) from Colgate University. My Ph.D. is in Science Education from Western Michigan University. Here are my research interests.

How did you become interested in teaching? My undergraduate degree was in molecular biology. I worked for several years in the pharmaceutical industry. Over time, I discovered that what I enjoyed most about my positions had to do with the teaching and learning aspects of science. Making the transition to teaching was the best career move I have ever made.
How did you become interested in teaching in this discipline? I have always enjoyed science, particularly biology. I also enjoy working with students of various ages - helping them to have a passion for learning about science.
What has been your funniest or most memorable teaching experience? A student in one of my biology classes placed an electronic whoopie cushion underneath the front desk where I normally stood during whole-class discussions. She had a wireless transmitter! It was the most realistic sounding thing I (and the rest of the class) had ever heard. Talk about getting embarassed (and I didn't even do it!)
What is your favorite food? Indian Cuisine (particularly chicken tikki marsala). I am also originally from the state of Indiana, so I suppose that my affection for corn on the cob has some root in genetics. Did I mention that I also like Pizza?
What is your favorite quote? The distinguished scientist, Anthony C. Allison, passed along a quote to me from the philosopher Soren Kierkegaard: "Life can only be understood looking backwards but it must be lived going forwards." I like this one.
Who is your favorite author?

Several come to mind. Nevil Schute for his portrayals of the human spirit during and after WWII. I especially enjoy his "Trustee from the Toolroom", "Pied Piper" and "A Town Like Alice". I have also enjoyed John Steinbeck's "East of Eden". I like historical biographies as well - I'd highly recommend David McCollough's "John Adams".

What is your favorite movie? The Sting.
What do you like to do when you are not teaching? I have always been an avid runner, swimmer and bicycle rider. I also have been an antique British car enthusiast and restorer. For the past several years, I have actively collected and restored antique electrostatic devices.
What is one of your favorite college memories from when you were a student? I went to the University of Colorado in Boulder. Nearly every memory from that beautiful place is a good one. I used to rock climb very extensively, and I have fond memories of the hours spent climbing Red Garden Wall in Eldorado Canyon or running on the Mesa Trail.
Who are some of your heroes?

My father was the best man I have ever known. I miss him every day.

I also greatly admire the distinguished scientist Anthony C. Allison - largely for his acute mind and diverse interests. He is an impressive figure and a gentleman.
