The Assumption College Student Development & Counseling Center offers the following services:
Assessment/Treatment
Planning
During assessment, your counselor will work with you to evaluate
your situation and suggest an appropriate treatment plan.
This plan may include individual counseling or group counseling
here at the Center, referral to a counselor or nutritionist
in the community, referral for day treatment, hospitalization,
or a combination of the above.
Individual Counseling
In individual counseling, you meet with a counselor once a
week or as needed for counseling, support, and problem-solving
based on the assessment and treatment plan. Issues addressed
might include: your thoughts and beliefs about food and weight;
your fears and anxieties; unhealthy or dangerous eating or
exercise habits (e.g., restricting, bingeing, purging, laxative
abuse, overexercising); and social pressures related to body
image and appearance.
Group Counseling
In group counseling, you meet weekly for a period of about
8 to 10 weeks with other people who are struggling with similar
food and weight-related issues. Research has shown that people
report benefiting greatly from the peer support and understanding
group work provides. The Eating Disorders Support Group here
at Assumption College includes education on a variety of topics
as well as open discussion.
To join the Eating Disorders Group, contact
Marta Carlson at 508-767-7409 to schedule a screening interview.
The purpose of this interview is to provide you with further
information about the group and to determine if the group
is the right fit for you. This group typically meets Wednesday
evenings from 7 to 8:30 pm at the Student Development & Counseling Center
at Assumption College. This group is open to all students
enrolled in any of the colleges of the Worcester Consortium.
