Who comes for personal counseling and
why?
Friends are great and it is important to have a support system
to go to when you're having a difficult time. But friends
usually have an opinion about what you should do.
Personal counseling offers a safe place
to come and explore issues that are affecting you, get help
figuring out what your options are, and come up with ideas
about how to handle different situations. A personal counselor
can provide objective feedback, offer some new ways to cope
with situations, provide information about other resources,
or just simply listen while you sort through an issue out
loud.
What do students talk about in counseling? Roommate problems,
homesickness, academic concerns, difficulty sleeping, relationship
issues, and anxiety - these are just a few of the kinds of
issues that students bring to our counselors. For more information
right now about college student concerns go to www.campusblues.com.
Any information you share in your personal counseling sessions
is confidential. That means no one has access to what you
say in your sessions or even that you are coming to the
Student Development & Counseling Center for counseling unless you give
written permission for your counselor to share that information.
Anyone working at the Student Development & Counseling Center abides by
these guidelines, including our workstudy students.
Between 250 and 300 students take advantage
of the personal counseling services available at the Student Development & Counseling Center each academic year. Counseling services
are included in your tuition so there is no charge to you
to come for counseling at the Student Development & Counseling Center.
Personal counseling is available to full-time undergraduate
students of Assumption. Call x 7409 for an appointment.
