Assumption College offers an active On-campus Recruiting program that provides full-time undergraduate students with an opportunity to be selected to interview for entry-level positions with participating employers. Each year, representatives from area businesses and agencies visit our campus to interview students who have expressed interest in particular positions and organizations. This is a highly competitive program between colleges and universities of all sizes and specialties. The eligibility requirements vary from employer to employer and most seek students with backgrounds and qualifications that are considered an exact match. Many students are successful in getting their first job offer through the program or subsequent site visits and interviews. However, on-campus recruiting should NOT be the only focus of any job search. It is intended to supplement your personal search.

Although the on-campus recruiting procedures may seem complex and formal, you can simplify the process by starting early. It is advantageous to visit the Student Development Center/Office of Career Services, (SDCC/OCS) either in the spring semester of your junior year, or no later than the fall semester of your senior year to register for the program, as popular employer schedules tend to fill fast.

ELIGIBILITY (back to top)

1. On-campus interviews are for undergraduate students completing their degree during the current academic year.

2. Students may choose to interview in either or both the fall and spring semesters.

3. Students may choose to sign-up for one or more interviews during their senior year, although there is NO GUARANTEE of interview(s) or subsequent job offer(s), as employers make the selections based on their needs and criteria. Students are subject to the rules and regulations that relate to the On-campus Recruiting Program.

4. In the event that a student is not selected on the company interview list, there may be an interview waiting list for students who present extenuating circumstances.

5. Registration begins by completing the registration form (which can be downloaded above).

Students are responsible for supplying a sufficient number of resumes for each company with which they choose to interview.

ESSENTIAL TASKS (back to top)

1. Prepare an accurate resume! This resume will be transmitted and displayed for employers to review.

2. Resumes will be displayed in the OCS Career Resource Room in binders by major and/or chronological files. Student names may be submitted to the school newspaper and/or listed in the career services newsletters or on career services bulletin boards or employment listings to record hiring employment data and participation in the recruiting process.

3. Register for on campus recruiting by carefully reading this entire guideline and by completing the registration form (downloadable above) and returning the form to the Office of Career Services at the Student Development Center. Hand deliver the form to Rita Taylor, the Administrative Secretary.

4. Resumes are collected on specific dates and the resume collection process requires appropriate student participation by providing sufficient resumes on the specific resume collection dates. If students are ill, absent or involved in all day college approved prior commitments such as internships or travel to conferences or sports events, the student may arrange for resumes to be submitted by a designee. Or the student can contact career services and arrange to pre-submit the resumes.

5. Interview sign-ups must be done IN PERSON unless special permission is granted by one of the Co-Directors of Career Service. Students will be notified by telephone. Students who do not have phones must make special arrangements if there is a need to arrange notification.

6. Once you sign up for an interview, you must attend that interview or cancel within the limits of the Interview Cancellation Policy stated in this guideline.

7. Parking at the SDCC is a difficult matter and students should plan to walk to the Center. Plan to arrive at least FIVE MINUTES before your stated interview time.

8. Students are asked to wear business suits for interview activity. If the employer is wearing business casual, he or she will appreciate your manners and business related attire.

9. There is a $100 fine and suspension from the On-Campus Recruiting process levied on students who are determined NO SHOWS for interviews that they signed up for and thereby agreed to attend. The fine will be attached to the student’s college bill, which must be cleared before graduation.

10. Any conflict arising from On-Campus Recruiting activity or related policy must be promptly reported and discussed with a career counselor. Voicemail messages must be followed up with an IN-PERSON session if requested by the Career Counselor.

11. Students who accept second and third interviews are obligated to attend these events. Students must cancel interviews in a timely manner similar to the notification process required for On-Campus interviews. You must notify the OCS if you cancel an OFF CAMPUS INTERVIEW. Weather issues sometimes govern interview activity. Icy road conditions and snowstorms would be possible causes for last minute cancellation of an interview, but there must be a call to the employer and the OCS to report this potential problem before the interview.

12. Students should always have a spare resume available when attending an interview. Students should request business cards from employers and use the cards to direct THANK YOU NOTES to the interviewer. Students who send thank you notes experience more second and third interviews and they often gain advantages when offers are presented. Please plan to send thank you notes especially to those employers whom you really want to impress.

13. Career Services will provide NANS (No Appointment Necessary Sessions) during this academic year on Thursdays, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at Charlie’s in the Hagan Campus Center. This will be an ideal time to review the Interview Assessment Forms (IAF) that employers fill out after each interview.

14. Campus and off-campus interview activity reflects Assumption College. Kindly be on time for each interview appointment.

15. Late cancellations are unacceptable unless you experience a crisis such as a car accident, family emergency or hospitalization. Plan to provide written documentation if such a crisis should occur. Notify your career counselor about the crisis even if this involves an off-campus interview. OCS prefers to hear from you before we hear from the employer.

16. Employer generated offers are to be regarded as important events. Plan to be timely in turning down offers if you plan to accept other employment. Call the employer and thank him or her for all their efforts and insights, but politely indicate that you are accepting employment elsewhere.

17. If you RECEIVE and ACCEPT a job offer, you must withdraw from all other search activity. You are ethically obligated to the employer who tenured an offer that you chose to accept.

18. Withdrawal letters are best sent when you have formally chosen employment. Send withdrawal letters to employers that you may wish to demonstrate special courtesy to, especially if you have been favorably impressed by their organization.

19. Courtesy and manners are essential success habits! Every time you demonstrate good manners and the essential tenets of correct business etiquette, you enhance your reputation.

REQUIRED NOTICE OF CANCELLATION REQUEST (back to top)

Notice of an interview cancellation MUST be given directly to a Career Counselor.

Monday interview cancellations require notice to be given by 4:30 p.m., on the previous Thursday.

Tuesday interview cancellations require notice to be given by 4:30 p.m., on the previous Friday.

Wednesday interview cancellations require notice to be given by 4:30 p.m., on the previous Monday.

Thursday interview cancellations require notice to be given by 4:30 p.m., on the previous Tuesday.

Friday interview cancellations require notice to be given by 4:30 p.m., on the previous Wednesday.

Cancellation requests are serious business. Emergencies can and do happen. Hospitalization is an example of a reason to request a cancellation. Failure to show up for an interview, or failure to cancel in a timely manner, can result in the loss of recruiting privileges for the entire semester and the assessment of a $100.00 fine. Therefore, sign up ONLY for interviews that are important to you.

When a Career Counselor approves a cancellation request, prompt notice will be given to the employer. However, cancellation may preclude future opportunities with this organization. The Office of Career Services cannot guarantee a follow-up interview even in the event of an approved cancellation request. A letter of apology must be written to the recruiter, and a copy submitted to the OCS. Student cancellations are dealt with on an individual basis. The OCS makes every effort to establish and maintain a positive and ethical business relationship with company recruiters and students. We all must do our part.
