Assessment Testing:
Self-Directed Search
The Self-Directed Search (SDS) is a self-administered,
self-scored, and
self-interpreted career counseling tool. It includes two booklets:
an
Assessment Booklet and an Occupational Classification Booklet.
To use the SDS, a person fills out the Assessment
Booklet and obtains a
three-letter, occupational code, or summary code. The summary
code is then used to locate suitable occupations in the Occupational
Classification
Booklet. In short, the SDS provides a career counseling experience
by
simulating what a person and a counselor might do together
in several
interviews. Most people can complete the SDS in 40-50 minutes.
The SDS was developed for two main
purposes:
- To multiply the number of people a counselor
can serve, and
- To provide a career counseling experience
for people who do not have, or who do not wish to have,
access to a career counselor.
