Anna Maffeo
Class of 2009
Organizational Communication
When Anna Maffeo ’09 started at Assumption in 2005, she knew she wanted to take every opportunity to immerse herself in new experiences.
Riding horses was something she had always wanted to do. During her freshman year she decided to give it a try and went on to be an active member of the Assumption College Equestrian team until she graduated.
“I never would have thought it would have turned out to be one of my favorite activities throughout college,” Maffeo said.
Horseback riding wasn't the only interest the College allowed her to experiment with. Maffeo came to Assumption unsure about her major.
“I always knew I wanted to do something with business, but I never quite knew what exactly.”
Her marketing and English classes showed her the impact of communication on business, and she found her niche. As an organizational communication major with a minor in Spanish, Maffeo has found many ways to apply what she learned in the classroom.
With an internship at Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital during her junior year she took a step closer to determining the kind of career she wanted to pursue. She also brought back to campus what she learned at the hospital.
“My time at St. Jude really allowed me to use what I learned at Assumption, and apply it to my work,” She started a fundraising program, “Up Til Dawn,” on campus to help support Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital efforts. Maffeo’s “Up Til’ Dawn” initiative has raised over $50,000 for the research at the hospital to date.
“Through the courses in my major and others, I really learned how to apply my skills to the real world,” Maffeo says. “The small community I was surrounded by (at Assumption) helped me develop into a leader, and gave me the confidence I needed to take charge.”
She has left her mark on campus through her hard work; not only in her academic courses, but also in the time she invested in her extra curricular activities. As an Admissions tour guide, president of Student Interviews, founder of “Up Till’ Dawn,” a math tutor at the Academic Support Center, and a member of the Equestrian Club, Maffeo has the knowledge, confidence and experience to achieve her goals, thanks, she says, to her Assumption education.
