The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Cultures, reflecting the central educational values and commitment of Assumption College, insures that our students develop skills of content analysis and an understanding of global perspectives through the study of modern and classical languages, literatures, and cultures.

  • Department utilizes languages in their social context, rather than just building language skills.
  • Students are encouraged to study junior year abroad.
  • Teacher certification is available in French, Spanish and Classics.
  • Use of Italian, French and Latin American films adds a unique cultural component to the curriculum.

  • Bonnie Catto - Author of the textbook Selections from Lucretius' De rerum natura and Latina Mythica
  • Elisabeth Howe - Teaching French culture through film
  • Dona Kercher - Focusing on the importance of Alfred Hitchcock's films and his career model for four major Spanish and Latin American directors, Pedro Almodovar, Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro Amenbar, and Alex de la Iglesia.
  • Maryanne Leone - Investigating representations of national identity and recent immigration to Spain and the influence of factors such as gender and sexuality.
  • Anthony Zielonka - A study of the correspondence of French novelist Gustave Flaubert
