Welcome Home!
Or, at least, welcome to Finally Home—the culmination of three years of reporting, writing, and editing by Assumption College students, all dedicated to telling the stories of the people of Greater Worcester Habitat for Humanity, a partnership housing organization. While the organization was facing a name change at press time, all work on these pages retain the name of the original organization.
These people include both the volunteers of Greater Worcester Habitat and, of course, the people they are striving to help: The hard-working, low-income people who, through the program, work to own a decent home for themselves and their children.
This web site contains the work of two magazine writing classes at Assumption, both taught by Associate Professor Mike Land. The first class, in 2006, set out to write a book. The text and some of the photos from that project—Finally Home: The First Twenty Years of Greater Worcester Habitat for Humanity—can be seen through links on this site. In addition to profiles, it includes a history of both the local and international organizations and other overview materials. Assumption College donated the first printing of the book to Greater Worcester Habitat.
Then came a second magazine writing class, in Spring 2008. Those students wrote profiles of three more Greater Worcester Habitat families and eight board members.
These combined efforts of the students are a reflection of Assumption College’s commitment to producing writers who make a difference in the world beyond the campus.
