Second Annual Assumption College Cystic Fibrosis Road Race to take place Sunday
May, 2000,
Over a year ago, current Assumption College Junior and cystic fibrosis victim, Bobby Burgohlzer began a phenomenal project. With his roommates, he decided to bring attention to this disease that has plagued him since birth. In a recent speech that he gave, he talked not only of his struggle with this disease, but how he could not have achieved this goal without the support from the Assumption College community.

After the incredible success of his first Road Race event where he raised $10,000, Bobby knew he needed to continue this fight. Ironically, he enrolled in Professor Lucia Knoles, Ph.D. Speech Class and found the team he needed to make this Road Race an Annual Event. The requirements of the Speech Class are not as they may seem on the surface. Yes, you work on your communication skills, but it is how you use those skills that is most important. The requirements of the class, which are attached, mandate that "this course is not about becoming a smooth talker, a scam artist, or a power monger. It is about becoming a productive perso

Assumption College announced that Harry V. Keefe Jr., Chairman and CEO of Keefe Managers, Inc., New York, NY, will speak at its eleventh annual President's Council Distinguished Lecture.

Mr. Keefe will speak on "Charting the Future of Banking in the United States" at the annual lecture to be held on Tuesday, May 2, 2000. The lecture will be held in the Hagan Campus Center Hall at 6:00 p.m.

Dr. Lowenthal, a resident of Princeton, MA, received his Master of Arts and Ph.D. from the New School for Social Research. He has taught political philosophy and allied subjects at Boston College for the past thirty-five years.

Blackstone River Valley Agencies Receive Money
from Assumption College

May, 2000, -On Friday, April 28, Assumption College's University Transportation Center (UTC) announced nine recipients in a first round of grant awards totaling more than $45,000. The ceremony was held on Assumption's campus.

Of the nine recipients, four of them are concerned with the impact that transportation has on the environment in and around the Blackstone River Valley.

Central Falls High School Receives Money from
Assumption College

May, 2000,-On Friday, April 28, Assumption College's University Transportation Center (UTC) announced nine recipients in a first round of grant awards totaling more than $45,000. The ceremony was held on Assumption's campus.

One of the nine recipients, the Central Falls High School of Central Falls, RI, will receive a grant of $5,995 in order to support student-teacher collaboration in the production of an interactive CD-ROM for use in the primary and middle school grades and libraries throughout the Blackstone River Valley Corridor. The interdisciplinary effort between the Chemistry, Life Sciences, Biology and Social Studies areas will produce a historic, scientific and technical examination of the interaction between the technology of transportation and the effects it has had on the environment and history of the Blackstone River Valley.

Assumption President Goes to Cuba
April, 2000,
President Thomas R. Plough of Assumption College will be a part of a delegation of college presidents and administrators to Cuba this week. U.S. Representatives James P. McGovern and J. Joseph Moakley will lead a trip to further understanding between the United States and Cuba. Plough is one of several college presidents from the Central Massachusetts area to attend the April 15-19, 2000 trip.

Assumption College Announces Commencement Speaker

Assumption College has announced Worcester-native Kenneth S. Apfel, United States Commissioner of Social Security and a member of President Clinton's Cabinet, as its commencement speaker. Commencement is scheduled for Saturday, May 20, 2000.

Dancing at Lughnasa to be performed at Assumption College
April, 2000, AC Upstage, the student theater group at Assumption College, has announced their spring performance. Dancing at Lughnasa, by playwrite Brian Friel, will be performed April 30- May 2.

The Assumption College Rabbi Joseph Klein Lecture took place this evening, Thursday, March 23, at 7:00 p.m. This year's speaker, Rabbi Eric Yoffie, spoke about "Good News, Bad News: Extraordinary Achievements and Current Tensions in Catholic-Jewish Relations." By coincidence, his speaking at Assumption took place the same day that Pope John Paul II visited Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem.

March, 2000, Open Windows to Arts and Culture, a project of Assumption College, the City of Worcester and other institutions, is now exhibiting the following artists downtown:

Lyndon LaRouche Campaign Representative to Speak at Assumption College
March, 2000, On Tuesday, March 21, Roger Ham, the New England Coordinator of the Lyndon LaRouche for President campaign will speak at Assumption College. The event will take place in the Auditorium of the LaMaison building at 7:30 pm. The event is free, and the public is welcome.

The event is being sponsored by the student-run TV station WACT, and by "La Provocateur," the student-run newspaper.

 

Dress for Success at Assumption College

Worcester, MA- Join us on Thursday, March 16, at 7:00 p.m. in the Hagan Campus Center Hall for a great program and presentation for college seniors interested in knowing more about the variety of dress codes in the workplace. What are the differences between interview attire, business and professional wear, dress casual, business casual, and casual Friday?

There will be an opportunity at the end of the program for students to have their outfit critiqued (if they chose to wear it to the program). Tips on tying a necktie, using a scarf to accessorize, and many other ideas for stretching a work clothing budget will be presented.

 

Catholic-Jewish Relations to be Discussed
At Assumption College

March, 2000, The Annual Rabbi Joseph Klein Lecture will be taking place Thursday, March 23, at 7:00 p.m. in the Salon of La Maison Francaise, Assumption College.

The speaker will be Rabbi Eric Yoffie, a native of Worcester and since 1996 the President of The Union of American Hebrew Congregations.

Rabbi Yoffie will be speaking about "Good News, Bad News: Extraordinary Achievements and Current Tensions in Catholic-Jewish Relations."

The lecture is open to the public at no charge.

 

Criminal Justice for a New Century
March, 2000,
The Assumption College Center for Continuing and Professional Education is sponsoring a Criminal Justice Symposium on Friday, April 14 from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in La Maison Francaise at Assumption College.

The Hon. Andre A. Gelinas, Associate Justice of Massachusetts Appeals Court, will present the keynote address on Criminal Justice Issues for a New Century. Three panel presentations will target contemporary issues in Juvenile Justice, Domestic Violence, and Sentencing. Reservations are required and the fee is $10.00. Area College Students to Clean-Up Worcester
March, 2000, On Saturday, April 1, 2000, Students of the Worcester Consortium Colleges will participate in the Sixth Annual Mayor's College Clean-Up.

The event will begin at the Laska Gymnasium of Assumption College on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. From Assumption, students will enter into the Worcester community to clean-up trash and debris in several designated areas.

Details of Assumption College's Expansion Announced

January, 2000, Assumption College, as well as officials from the City of Worcester, announced today the proposed expansion plans for a construction project commencing with two new residence halls, seven classrooms and art studios, and additional administrative offices.

"The proposed construction is in direct response to the College's commitment to fostering an intellectual, social, and spiritual community where faculty, current in their scholarship, encourage students to ask the broadest questions at the deepest levels," said Dr. Thomas R. Plough, president of Assumption College.

Assumption College Joins Forces to Aid Fallen Worcester Firefighters
January, 2000,
When tragedy struck our City of Worcester on December 3, 1999, Assumption College pulled together in support for the fallen firefighters' families. Almost immediately, the Student Government Association and the Office of Student Activities began coordinating the efforts of collecting student donations. To date, over $4,400 has been raised from the combined efforts of the students, faculty and staff of the College.

Open Windows to Arts and Culture has New Exhibits
December, 1999, The Worcester Open Windows to Arts and Culture projects, is now exhibiting the following artists' works: At 306 Main Street: wood carvings by Ron Bushnell at 507 Main Street: paintings by Michel Merle; photography by Fred Richmond; and sculptures and paintings by George Sampson

Open Windows, a project of Assumption College, the City of Worcester and other local institutions, uses donated vacant storefronts downtown and converts them into temporary art exhibits. For more information, call 767-7323.

Area Students to compete in Science Olympiad at Assumption College
November, 1999, A Science Olympiad meet will be held this Saturday, November 20, at Assumption College in the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Science building. Students at the Olympiad will participate in four events, including Battery Buggy, Bio-Process Lab, Metric Mastery, and Science of Fitness. The events are being run by Assumption students and faculty, and by students from the UMass Medical Center.

November, 1999, Rena Finder, a survivor of the Nazi death camp, Auschwitz, will present a lecture entitled "A Survivor on Schindler's List" at the College's Hagan Campus Center Hall on Tuesday, November 16, 1999, at 7:00 p.m.

Assumption College Initiates Storefront Exhibits in Downtown Worcester
October, 1999, When Assumption College was preparing for the inauguration of its new President, Dr. Tom Plough, officials at the College decided to target downtown as part of the celebration. More specifically, they targeted vacant storefronts to convert into temporary art exhibit space.

Assumption College Professor Recognized as having one of the Best Websites in Education
October, 1999, One of the best sites on the Internet for education in the humanities has been awarded to a professor at Assumption College. Dr. John McClymer, a history professor and director of the college's Honors Program, was recently recognized for his "Women's History Workshop" web site as one of the top educational web pages.

Assumption College to be Acknowledged as National Example by U.S. Department of Transportation
October, 1999, Tomorrow Assumption College will formally be recognized as a national example of how to use transportation issues and concern for the environment to establish partnerships within the community and to broaden our schools curriculums.

September, 1999, On Sunday, September 12, 1999, the Second Annual March for Christian Athletes will be held at Assumption College. REFOUNDING OF THE ECUMENICAL INSTITUTE OF ASSUMPTION COLLEGE
September, 1999, Assumption College announces the refounding of its Ecumenical Institute. The Institute, originally established in 1968 by Rev. Ernest Fortin, A.A., and Rev. Oscar Remick and long headed by Dr. Wayne Rollins, will be directed by Dr. Marc A. LePain of the College's Theology Department.

August, 1999, The latest U.S. News & World Report college rankings for 1999 have been released. What should come as no surprise is that Assumption College has moved up in the Best Regional Universities category, from second tier to top tier, being ranked as number 29.

Leadership is Announced

August 1999, Dr. Thomas R. Plough, president of Assumption College, is pleased to announced that the leadership for the College's University Transportation Center (UTC)-the Center for Transportation and Environmental Education for the Twenty-First Century-is now in place. The UTC is only the second one in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the first one in the country to develop an education and science curricula that incorporates transportation and the environment for use in the training of future K-12 teachers.
