Assumption College Acquires Fr. Fortin's Library
Worcester, MA- On Thursday, April 6, at 4:00 p.m., the d'Alzon Library will host a celebration in honor of the gift of the library of Rev. Ernest L. Fortin, A.A.
Fr. Fortin has had a long association with Assumption College.
Fr. Ernest Fortin, A.A., a native of Woonsocket, RI, came to Assumption
Preparatory School in 1937 and graduated from Assumption College
in 1946 after entering the Augustinians of the Assumption. He
obtained the S.T.L. degree from the Angelicum in Rome in 1950
and the D. Es L. from the University of Paris (Sorbonne) in 1955.
He then joined the faculty of Assumption College, where he taught
until 1970. While at Assumption, Fr. Fortin taught theology and
philosophy and co-founded the college's Ecumenical Institute in
1968. Until his retirement in 1997, he was professor of theology
and co-director of the Institute on Religion and Politics at Boston
College. He was the longest serving trustee of Assumption College
at the time of his retirement. Fr. Fortin's essays, written over
a span of forty years and dealing with a wide range of subjects,
have been edited in a three-volume publication of his Collected
Essays.
The gift of his library of books includes almost 3,000 periodicals.
Many of these books have Fr. Fortin's own notations and comments.
They are currently being catalogued for display.
