Assumption College Involved in Latino
Community
July, 2000—Recently, two outstanding brothers from the
Worcester Latino Community graduated from Assumption College.
Angel Luis Rodriguez and Luis Angel Rodriguez received their diplomas
from Assumption in May, both of them graduating with a degree
in Social and Rehabilitation Services. Angel and Luis attended
Assumption through the John S. Laws Institute, a program to empower
talented but under-served, low-income high school youth from culturally
diverse backgrounds in becoming leaders in their community.

Last day of Assumption College Recreational
Greyhound Camp
July 2000—Today, Friday, July 28, 2000 is the last day of
a three-week Recreational Greyhound Camp at Assumption College.
To celebrate, the camp staff have set up various activities, which
will include a lunch-time concert for the campers and entire college
community. The Concert will be by local artist Ken Baxter, who
is also a Worcester Firefighter.

Assumption College Adds New Programs
of Study (Classes to begin in Fall 2000)
June, 2000—Assumption College has announced the addition
of two new major courses of study and a new minor, all of which
were recently approved by the Board of Trustees. In addition to
the already existing programs, students can now choose to major
in Latin American Studies or Visual Arts. In addition, a minor
in Community Service Learning has also been added.

Assumption College Presents West Hartford
Resident with the Honorary Alumnus Award
June, 2000—Assumption College presented the Honorary Alumnus
Award to Dr. Wayne G. Rollins of (75 Craigmoor Rd.) West Hartford,
CT at its recent Reunion Weekend. Among his many accomplishments,
Dr. Rollins has been involved with Assumption College as the Director
of the Ecumenical Institute from 1976-93, and he was awarded a
full-year sabbatical for research as Visiting Scholar in 1996.
Currently, he holds the position of Professor Emeritus of Biblical
Studies in the Department of Theology.

Athletic Director of the Year Award
Given to Assumption College
June, 2000—Rita Castagna, Assumption College's Athletic Director,
was recently recognized by the National Association of Collegiate
Directors of Athletics as one of the 1999-2000 NACDA/Continental
Airlines Regional Athletic Directors of the Year. Assumption College
competes in the Northeast 10 Conference and is a NCAA Division
II school.

Dismas House Announces Sr. Helen Prejean
as Keynote Speaker
June, 2000—On November 4, 2000, Sr. Helen Prejean will be
visiting Assumption College as the keynote speaker for a Dismas
House fundraising dinner. The event will take place in the Taylor
Dining Hall on Assumption's campus.

Assumption College Presents Fitchburg
Native with the Outstanding Achievement Award
June, 2000—The Honorable Judge Andre A. Gelinas '60 of (689
High Rock Rd.) Fitchburg, MA, received the 2000 Outstanding Achievement
Award from Assumption College at its recent Reunion Weekend. Judge
Gelinas, Associate Justice of Appeals Court, has broad vision,
untiring energy, skillful mediation, and is a valued counselor
of Bar and Bench. Judge Gelinas is also an outstanding community
leader in the fields of art, education, and medical care.

Assumption College Presents Holden Resident
with the Jack L. Bresciani Outstanding Alumnus Award
June, 2000—Assumption College Alumni Association recently
honored John J. DiPietro '72 of (70 Timber Lane) Holden, MA, with
the Jack L. Bresciani Outstanding Alumnus Award at Reunion Weekend.
Among his accomplishments, Mr. DiPietro has been involved with
Assumption as the Director of Public Affairs from 1973-75, the
Director of Alumni Relations from 1975-78, and he was President
of the Alumni Association from 1993-95. Mr. DiPietro owns Advanced
Business Concepts/DiPietro located in Holden, MA.

Assumption College Announces Evening
Programs for
Summer Ecumenical Institute
June, 2000—The evening schedule for Assumption College's Summer
Ecumenical Institute has been announced. The following events
will take place from Sunday, June 25 to Friday, June 30, 2000.
These events provide an ecumenical and contemporary perspective
on the topic of this year's Summer Insitutute, "Saint Augustine:
Pastor at the Dawn of a New Millennium." The Institute will
also mark the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the founding
of the Augustinians of the Assumption, who sponsor the College.

Second Annual Assumption
College Cystic Fibrosis Road Race to take place Sunday
May, 2000—Over a year ago, current Assumption College Junior
and cystic fibrosis victim, Bobby Burgohlzer began a phenomenal
project. With his roommates, he decided to bring attention to
this disease that has plagued him since birth. In a recent speech
that he gave, he talked not only of his struggle with this disease,
but how he could not have achieved this goal without the support
from the Assumption College community.

"Charting the Future
of Banking in the United States" To be Topic of Assumption College Lecture
May, 2000—Assumption College announced that Harry V. Keefe
Jr., Chairman and CEO of Keefe Managers, Inc., New York, NY, will
speak at its eleventh annual President's Council Distinguished
Lecture. Mr. Keefe will speak on "Charting the Future of Banking
in the United States" at the annual lecture to be held on
Tuesday, May 2, 2000. The lecture will be held in the Hagan Campus
Center Hall at 6:00 p.m. |

from St. Andrews Presbyterian College, and a Masters in Theology

Assumption College Announces the D'Alzon Professor for the 2000-2002 Academic Years

recent appointment of Dr. David Lowenthal as the d'Alzon Professor
for the next two academic years. Dr. Lowenthal, a resident of Princeton, MA, received his Master
of Arts and Ph.D. from the New School for Social Research. He
has taught political philosophy and allied subjects at Boston
College for the past thirty-five years. |

May, 2000—On Friday, April 28, Assumption College's University
Transportation Center (UTC) announced nine recipients in a first
round of grant awards totaling more than $45,000. The ceremony
was held on Assumption's campus. Of the nine recipients, four of them are concerned with the
impact that transportation has on the environment in and around
the Blackstone River Valley. |

Assumption President Goes
to Cuba
April, 2000—President
Thomas R. Plough of Assumption College will be a part of a delegation
of college presidents and administrators to Cuba this week. U.S.
Representatives James P. McGovern and J. Joseph Moakley will lead
a trip to further understanding between the United States and
Cuba. Plough is one of several college presidents from the Central
Massachusetts area to attend the April 15-19, 2000 trip. |

April, 2000—Assumption College has announced Worcester-native
Kenneth S. Apfel, United States Commissioner of Social Security
and a member of President Clinton's Cabinet, as its commencement
speaker. Commencement is scheduled for Saturday, May 20, 2000. |

Pope John Paul II Visits Yad Vashem
March, 2000—The Assumption College Rabbi Joseph Klein Lecture
took place this evening, Thursday, March 23, at 7:00 p.m. This
year's speaker, Rabbi Eric Yoffie, spoke about "Good News,
Bad News: Extraordinary Achievements and Current Tensions in Catholic-Jewish
Relations." By coincidence, his speaking at Assumption took
place the same day that Pope John Paul II visited Yad Vashem,
the Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem. |

Mayor's College Clean-Up. The event will begin at the Laska Gymnasium of Assumption College

January, 2000—Assumption College, as well as officials
from the City of Worcester, announced today the proposed expansion
plans for a construction project commencing with two new residence
halls, seven classrooms and art studios, and additional administrative
offices. |
Assumption College Joins Forces to Aid Fallen Worcester Firefighters
January, 2000—When tragedy struck our City of Worcester on
December 3, 1999, Assumption College pulled together in support
for the fallen firefighters' families. Almost immediately, the
Student Government Association and the Office of Student Activities
began coordinating the efforts of collecting student donations.
To date, over $4,400 has been raised from the combined efforts
of the students, faculty and staff of the College. |

Area Students to compete
in Science Olympiad at Assumption CollegeNovember, 1999—A Science Olympiad meet will be held this

October, 1999—When Assumption College was preparing for
the inauguration of its new President, Dr. Tom Plough, officials
at the College decided to target downtown as part of the celebration.
More specifically, they targeted vacant storefronts to convert

October, 1999—One of the best sites on the Internet for
education in the humanities has been awarded to a professor at
Assumption College. Dr. John McClymer, a history professor and
director of the college's Honors Program, was recently recognized

Annual March for Christian Athletes will be held at Assumption

Refounding of the Ecumenical Institute of Assumption College
September, 1999—Assumption College announces the refounding
of its Ecumenical Institute. The Institute, originally established
in 1968 by Rev. Ernest Fortin, A.A., and Rev. Oscar Remick and
long headed by Dr. Wayne Rollins, will be directed by Dr. Marc
A. LePain of the College's Theology Department. |

August, 1999—The latest U.S. News & World Report college
rankings for 1999 have been released. What should come as no surprise
is that Assumption College has moved up in the Best Regional Universities
category, from second tier to top tier, being ranked as number

Leadership is Announced
August 1999—Dr. Thomas R. Plough, president of Assumption
College, is pleased to announced that the leadership for the College's
University Transportation Center (UTC)-the Center for Transportation
and Environmental Education for the Twenty-First Century-is now
in place. The UTC is only the second one in the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts and the first one in the country to develop an education
and science curricula that incorporates transportation and the
environment for use in the training of future K-12 teachers. |
