Assumption College Reacts to Vatican
Push for Control over Catholic Colleges

Worcester, MA- In response to the article that appeared today in the Boston Globe, "Catholic colleges see peril in Vatican push for control," Assumption College's President Thomas R. Plough issued the following statement.

"We, like many other colleges, are quite aware of the discussions going on and some of the perplexing problems for Catholic higher education in the United States should the Vatican maintain its current position on Catholic higher education. We are confident that the compromise approach suggested by many U.S. Bishops will ultimately prevail.

"This will be a topic at the national meeting of Catholic colleges and universities in February. It will continue here in Worcester as a local conversation with our bishop and other sister institutions. I anticipate that the dialogue will go on for some time before any definitive position is taken that will require an explicit response from Assumption College. I do not foresee any substantive change in our academic process, policy, and governance. Assumption College will continue as a Catholic liberal arts and sciences College founded by the Assumptionists, with an ongoing desire to shape the heart as well as the mind, character as well as intellect, the way students live as well as the way they work. Ultimately, I am optimistic that an approach will be followed which is in the interest of the Catholic Church and which reflects the real strength that Catholic higher education contributes to American culture."

Assumption College, which was founded in 1904 by the Assumptionists, has always been faithful to the founding fathers' vision. The motto of the school, "Until Christ Be Formed in You" is evident in the academic and social curricula at the College.
