UnumProvident funds Scholarship at Assumption College
First privately funded award for Rehabilitation Counseling graduate students

Worcester, MA — At its annual meeting this morning at Mechanics Hall, UnumProvident Corporation presented Thomas R. Plough, Ph.D., President of Assumption College, with the first disbursement of the Charles E. Soule Scholarship in Rehabilitation Counseling. Soule retired from Paul Revere Corporation in 1997 as Paul Revere and Provident Companies merged. He began his career in 1956 after graduating from Dartmouth College and served Paul Revere for 41 years, most recently as the company’s seventh President. This scholarship is a tribute to Soule’s many contributions to the disability industry.

UnumProvident, which formed after the mergers of Paul Revere, Unum and Provident Companies, is endowing the Charles E. Soule Scholarship. This merit-based award is the first privately funded scholarship available to full-time students enrolled in the Master of Arts in Rehabilitation Counseling program at Assumption.

“We are honored that UnumProvident recognizes the quality of our students and has chosen to provide them with the opportunity for a valued education in a field with so many options,” said Dr. Plough, president of Assumption College. “We’re also pleased that a rather substantial number of our graduates have found UnumProvident to be a company with outstanding career potential where their intellectual and social skills find practical application for those in need.”

UnumProvident Corporation is the leading disability insurer in the nation and provides comprehensive income protection and absence management solutions to corporate and individual customers. The company employs over 12,000 professionals nationwide including board-certified physicians, nurses and rehabilitation professionals who partner to help their customers return to work. J. Harold Chandler, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of UnumProvident, applauds the commitment of Assumption College to the rehabilitation profession: “We are honored to endow the Charles E. Soule Scholarship in Rehabilitation Counseling. The students who will benefit from the scholarship program will make a significant difference in the lives of those individuals who are recovering from an accident or illness. UnumProvident is committed to helping people lead independent and productive lives by returning them to work when possible. Chuck Soule was a pioneer in this field of service and we are pleased to honor him in this special way.”
