Assumption College to receive Thermal Cycler
Gene Mapping Technology gives Students Practical Skills


Worcester, MA, Assumption College recently received a 0.5 mL GeneAmp®PCR System 9700 Thermal Cycler from Applied Biosystems of Framingham. The 9700 Thermal Cycler is used in genetic mapping and the duplication of DNA.The Vice President and General Manager for Applied Biosystems, Mr. Joseph Malandrakis made the presentation to Dr. Thomas R. Plough on April 23. Mr. Malandrakis was joined by Alan Nasuti, Director of Human Resources for Applied Biosystems. Dr. Plough was be accompanied by Steven Theroux and Kim Schandel, both of whom are professors in the Biology Department at the College.


The significance of this machine to Assumption College is quite vast. First and foremost, it will allow Assumption students that have an interest in biotechnology science to gain practical knowledge that is considered standard in the biotechnology field today. The technology that this machine offers, will not only upgrade the equipment that we have now, but is essential to the education of students that will be working in this field after graduation. The 9700 Thermal Cycler will allow Assumption College to continue to train their students to be assets to biotech companies.
