Assumption College to Hold "Topping Off" Ceremony
June, 2002—Assumption College will hold a “topping off ceremony” to commemorate the raising of the final construction beam of the College’s new $18 million science and technology center. The red-white-and blue beam will be raised in a ceremony on at Tuesday, July 2, 2002 at the construction site.

UnumProvident funds Scholarship at Assumption College
First privately funded award for Rehabilitation Counseling graduate students

May, 2002—At its annual meeting this morning at Mechanics Hall, UnumProvident Corporation presented Thomas R. Plough, Ph.D., President of Assumption College, with the first disbursement of the Charles E. Soule Scholarship in Rehabilitation Counseling. Soule retired from Paul Revere Corporation in 1997 as Paul Revere and Provident Companies merged. He began his career in 1956 after graduating from Dartmouth College and served Paul Revere for 41 years, most recently as the company’s seventh President. This scholarship is a tribute to Soule’s many contributions to the disability industry.

The Legal and Ethical Issues of Dying to Be Discussed at Assumption College (Private Lecture)
May, 2002—Rev. John J. Paris, S.J., the Michael P. Walsh Professor of Bioethics, Boston College, will deliver the distinguished Assumption College President’s Council Lecture on Wednesday, May 8, 2002 at 6:00 p.m. in Hagan Campus Center Hall on the campus of the College. The topic of the lecture is "End of Life Care: Ethical and Legal Issues."

Assumption College Completes Largest Bond Offering in its History
May, 2002—Assumption College officials announced today that the largest public bond offering in the College’s history has been completed with the issuing of $47,005,000 in thirty year Variable Rate Demand Revenue Bonds through the Massachusetts Development Finance Agency.

Assumption College Chorale Performs Vivaldi’s Gloria
April, 2002—The Assumption College Chorale will perform Vivaldi's GLORIA with an orchestra on Thursday, May 2, 2002, at 8 p.m. in the College's Chapel of the Holy Spirit. Soloists include soprano, Sarah Hall, instructor of Music & Voice at Assumption College, and mezzo-soprano, Paula Murrihy, from County Kerry, Ireland, recipient of the Dame Joan Sutherland Award for Most Promising Young Singer and the McCormack Medal.

Assumption College to receive Thermal Cycler Gene Mapping Technology gives Students Practical Skills
April, 2002—Assumption College will be the fortunate recipient of a 0.5 mL GeneAmp®PCR System 9700 Thermal Cycler from Applied Biosystems of Framingham when the machine is formally presented to the College on Thursday, April 25, 2002 at 2:30 p.m. The 9700 Thermal Cycler is used in genetic mapping and the duplication of DNA.

Assumption College Announces New Vice President
April, 2002
—President Thomas R. Plough announced to the Assumption College community today the appointment of Dr. Catherine WoodBrooks as the Vice President for Student Life. Dr. WoodBrooks is currently the Dean of Student Life at Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut. She holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education/Student Affairs from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

Assumption College Hosts Open House on Sunday
April, 2002—Assumption College will host their annual Open House, meant for prospective students who have been accepted for the incoming Fall 2002 freshman class, on Sunday, April 7, 2002.

Dining Etiquette to Be Focus of Workshop at Assumption College
April, 2002—Assumption’s own Mrs. Manners will be presenting her ever-popular dining etiquette program on Thursday, April 11, 2002 at 6:15 p.m. Carol McGuiggan, co-director of career services in the Student Development Center at Assumption College , has become the area’s foremost expert in matters of etiquette, often lecturing at high schools, colleges, and professional organizations all over Massachusetts. This week, she will deliver one of her more popular programs, "Professional Business and Dining Etiquette" to interested members of the College’s senior class.

"Pope Pius XII and the Jews" Lecture Sponsored by the Ecumenical Institute at Assumption College
April, 2002—The Ecumenical Institute at Assumption College will present the annual Rabbi Klein lecture on Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. The lecture will be delivered by Rabbi David Dalin of the Jewish Theological Seminary and is titled, "Pius XII and the Jews." The topic is based on an essay Rabbi Dalin wrote which argues that the "wartime Pontiff did far more to rescue Jews during the Holocaust than any other ‘Righteous Gentile’ recognized by the state of Israel, including Raoul Wallenberg and Oskar Schindler.

April, 2002—The University Transportation Center (UTC) at Assumption College will sponsor a panel discussion on highway planning called “When a Road Runs Through It: Building Highways to Enhance Community Life,” at 6:30 pm in the Auditorium of La Maison Francaise.

Augustinians of the Assumption Purchase Catholic Digets, Now the Largest Catholic Publisher in the United States
March, 2002— For over a century and a half the Augustinians of the Assumption, founders of Assumption College (Worcester, MA), have had a publishing presence in France through their wholly-owned publishing company, Bayard. Recently, Bayard has increased its presence in the North American Catholic media market with three acquisitions, most notably the purchase of Catholic Digest, the largest paid–circulation Catholic magazine in the United States. The acquisition of Catholic Digest brings Bayard into almost half a million homes in North America each month.

91 Easter Baskets to Be Delivered to Four Area Shelters
March, 2002— faculty, staff and students have chosen to play Easter Bunny to area children this year. Members of the community were invited to donate a basket with $10 worth of "stuff," to area children in shelters. Over 70 people stepped up to the challenge and donated 91 baskets. These baskets will be delivered to four area shelters so the children they serve may experience the joy of receiving something from the Easter Bunny.

March, 2002—The Women’s Studies Committee at Assumption College will sponsor a discussion of the film “A Place Called Home” on Thursday, March 21 at 4:00 pm in the Salon of La Maison Fraincaise as part of Women’s History Month.

New d’Alzon Arts Exhibit
March, 2002—The d’Alzon Arts Series at Assumption College announces the opening of the Marie Poisson exhibit, “ Works in Various Media,” which runs from March 18-April 19 in the d’Alzon library.

March, 2002—The Latin American Studies program at Assumption College will present the lecture “The Malinche Paradigm: Performing Gender and Ethnicity in Mexican Culture," by Professor Sandra Messinger Cypess.

Poetry Reading at Assumption College
March, 2002—The d’Alzon Arts Series presents poet James Beschta and student poets from The Phoenix, Assumption’s student literary journal. Beschta is a 1972 graduate of Assumption who teaches English and Writing at Quabbin High School in Barre and at the Worcester Art Museum. He has won several poetry prizes including the Promethean Lamp Poetry Award and he is the co-author of the anthology, Bone Cages.

January, 2002—Assumption College will kick off Black History Month with a concert by the New York City Housing Authority Gospel Choir on Friday, February 1, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.

Assumption College Announces Third Accelerated Undergraduate/Graduate Program
December, 2001— Assumption College has just announced a new opportunity for undergraduate students to continue their studies at the College in pursuit of a Master's Degree. Under this Fifth Year Option Program, undergraduate seniors may now seek early admission to the Master of Arts in Special Education program. Students must have either a Concentration in Elementary or Secondary Education, or a major in one of the academic subjects of the liberal arts and sciences appropriate to Massachusetts teacher licensure at the 5-12 level. This program would allow students to earn a post baccalaureate degree a year earlier which could save them money in tuition costs.

College to Host a Middle School Science Olympiad
December, 2001—Assumption College’s Department of Natural Science will be hosting a middle school Science Olympiad on Saturday, December 1, 2001, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Kennedy Science Building on the Assumption College campus. There will be events in biology, chemistry, engineering, metrics, and fitness lead by members of the College community and the Science Olympiad organization.

"HIV and Company" Exhibit at Assumption College
November, 2001— College will present a multimedia exhibit titled "HIV and Company" as part of HIV/AIDS Awareness Week at the Hagan Campus Center Hall. The exhibit runs from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday-Thursday, and 9:00 am until 12 noon on Friday, November 30.

WBZ Sports Reporter Bob Lobel to Speak at Assumption
November, 2001—WBZ-TV sports correspondent Bob Lobel will share his experience and his take on the Boston sports scene with Assumption students, faculty, and staff on Monday, November 12, 2001 at 12:30 p.m. in Hagan Campus Center Hall.

Lecture on Human Nature to be Held at Assumption College
November, 2001—On Thursday, November 8, 2001, Assumption College will present a lecture by Peter Augustine Lawler. As this year's Emmanuel d'Alzon Lecturer, Mr. Lawler will speak on the topic, "Does Human Nature Have a
Future?" He will be discussing issues of public concern as they deal with matters in the advancements in Natural Science. An example of such an issue is the ongoing debate on stem cell research.

November, 2001—On Friday, November 9, 2001, will host a workshop titled "ADHD in Young Adults" as part of the Beck Institute for Cognitive Studies Fall Series on Child and Adolescent Behavior Problems.

—The Democrats and Republicans are sponsoring a debate for the Worcester District One City Council race between incumbent Steve Patton (D) and challenger Jerry Horton (R). October, 2001—On Sunday, October 28, 2001, Halloween will come early for the children of faculty, staff and administration at Assumption College. The students that live in the residence halls will be passing out candy in a safe, fun, and not so spooky environment.

Assumption College Athletes to Decorate Teddy Bears being sent to Victims of WTC Attack
October, 2001—Athletes will be on hand tomorrow night at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish (1295 Grafton Street, Worcester) to tie a ribbon and a poem on many of the hundreds of teddy bears they collected over the last two weeks.

—Assumption College will present a slideshow and lecture entitled "Classical Greek Art: The Search for Perfection," on Thursday, October 4, 2001 at 6:30 p.m. The lecture will be delivered by John Murphey, professor of Art in the Center for Continuing and Professional Education at College.

—Dr. Russell A. Barkley will be presented with Assumption College’s Aaron T. Beck Award for Excellence in Clinical Research on Friday October 12, 2001, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Dr. Barkley will also lead a workshop and discussion at the event.

Worcester Houses Featured in Exhibit at Assumption College
October, 2001—On Tuesday, October 16, 2001, Arnold Edinberg, a Worcester native, will give the opening lecture titled "These Old Houses" for the second in the Emmanuel d’Alzon Library Art Exhibit series. Mr. Edinberg will discuss why he chose to paint a number of portraits of Worcester homes without the owner’s knowledge. Over 15 portraits of homes, including some from the Beeching Street, Pleasant Street, and Elm Park area will be on display. Owners of the properties have been notified that their homes will be featured in this exhibit.

Soprano, Pianist to Perform at Assumption College
September, 2001—As part of Assumption College’s HUMANARTS Series, soprano Jane Shivick and pianist Olga Rogach will perform on Saturday, September 29, 2001 in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. The concert will feature selections from Giacomo Puccini's Madame Butterfly and Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story.

Renowned Pianist to Perform at Assumption College
September, 2001—As part of College’s HUMANARTS Series, pianist Sergey Schepkin will perform on Saturday, September 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. Sergey Schepkin has been hailed by the American Record Guide as "The major Bach interpreter of his generation." His concert will feature selections from Bach, as well as Sergey Rachmaninoff, Claude Debussy, and Frederic Chopin.

Assumption College to Host NEACAC College Fair
September, 2001—College will host a college fair for 230 schools on Wednesday, September 19 from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Thursday, September 20 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. in the Plourde Center.

Local Poets to Read at Assumption College
September, 2001—As part of College’s fall reading series, poets Stephen Campiglio and David Thoreen will read selections from their works on Friday, September 21 at 7 p.m. in the Emmanuel d'Alzon Library. Campiglio is a former editorial assistant at Assumption College and now teaches English at Holy Name High School in Worcester. He is a graduate of Worcester State College and has his Master's in education from Assumption. His poetry has appeared in various magazines, including The Literary Review, Northeast Corridor, and Asylum.

Assumption College Announces New Milleret Lecture
September, 2001—Assumption College announced today that the College's Ecumenical Institute has established a new annual lecture in honor of Blessed Marie-Eugénie Milleret, the founder of the Religious of the Assumption, a world-wide congregation of women and their associates. The close collaboration between Marie-Eugénie Milleret and Emmanuel d’Alzon , the founder of the Augustinians of the Assumption, continues today in the common endeavor of the women and men of the Assumption family at Assumption College.

Assumption College Hosts Event to Promote Early College Awareness
July, 2001—Sixty students from GEAR UP schools across Massachusetts will come together at Assumption College in Worcester from July 26 through July 28 to participate in a first-ever Summer Leadership Conference. GEAR UP is designed to promote school-wide changes in the CommonwealthÕs neediest middle schools by boosting college awareness and preparation among students and parents, and improving professional development of teachers and school counselors. The conference is aimed at building skills that will enable students to return to the classroom this fall as effective leaders and spokespersons for early college awareness.
