Assumption College -Involved in Latino Community
Recently, two outstanding brothers from the Worcester Latino Community graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Assumption College. Angel Rodriguez and Luis Rodriguez received their diplomas from Assumption this past May, both of them graduating with a major in Social and Rehabilitation Services. Angel and Luis attended Assumption through the John S. Laws Institute, a program to empower talented but under-served, low-income high school youth from culturally diverse backgrounds to become leaders in their community. Currently, Angel is working at CVS and McDonalds and Luis is working at the Great Brook Valley Day Care Center.
Assumption College congratulates both of them for such an accomplishment.
This fall, Assumption will begin enrolling students into its new
undergraduate major, Latin American Studies. The major in Latin
American Studies is designed to respond to the increasing interest
in the societies of the region and the need to understand the
complexity of their history, political and economic systems, social
structures, and literary and artistic expression. Students will
have the opportunity to increase familiarity with the dynamics
of other societies while enriching their own human experience
and strengthening their awareness of cultural diversity.
Students in the Latin American Studies major are encouraged to select from a variety of Assumption-approved study abroad programs administered by other institutions with sites in Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Central America. Students may also consider internships in a study abroad setting. The Mexican and Puerto Rican Missions may offer students the opportunity to plan interdisciplinary internships in conjunction with the departments of Sociology, Anthropology, Foreign Languages, History, or Theology. A summer program developed with the National University of Yucatan in Merida, Mexico will begin in the Summer of 2001.
A major in Latin American Studies will prepare students for graduate work or employment in numerous fields, such as government, business, industry, education, media, and community services. For more information on this program, contact Chairperson Magda deMoor at (508) 767-7589.
Assumption is also proud to host the annual YMCA Minority Achievers Dinner for the second year. This year's keynote speaker will be Martin Luther King, III. The event will be held on Friday, August 11, 2000. The Minority Achievers Program primary purpose is to help minority youth set and pursue high education and career goals. Tickets to the dinner can be purchased by calling Marie Boone at (508) 755-6101 ext. 230.
