Workshop on Addiction Intervention

 

Worcester, MA---Assumption College's Beck Institute for Cognitive Studies sponsored a workshop by Dr. Leonard A. Doerfler, entitled "Brief Interventions for the Addictions." The workshop took place on Friday, December 1, 2000, from 1:00-4:30 p.m., in La Maison Francaise's Salon.

The workshop reviewed the current trend toward brief, problem-focused interventions for addictions, and outline a model for clinical practice. Assessment strategies, elements of effective interventions, motivational issues, and therapeutic styles, will also be described.

Dr. Doerfler is Professor of Psychology at Assumption College, and Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. His clinical, research, and teaching interests focus on cognitive-behavioral interventions for addictions, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders. He also has extensive experience in training and supervising mental health professionals in the use of cognitive-behavioral therapies.

Founded in 1996, the College's Beck Institute sponsors education and training projects in cognitive therapeutic skills for graduate students and post-graduate professionals, as well as annually hosting speakers and conferences that address research and therapeutic developments in cognitive therapy.
