Fair
May, 2001—This Friday, May 25, 2001, The University
Transportation Center at Assumption College will be hosting a Transportation
Career Expo at Union Station. The Expo is designed for middle and high
school students to explore how almost 10 million Americans are involved
in keeping our nation on the move. The event is being organized to help
youngsters become award of the career possibilities in one of the largest
industries in the nation. |
Assumption
College Senior Receives a Fulbright Scholarship
May, 2001—Janine Rock, a senior at Assumption
College and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Rock of Tewksbury, Massachusetts,
has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Spain for the 2001-2002
academic year. She is the second of two Assumption College women that
have received this prestigious award. It is the first time in the history
of Assumption College that a student has ever received a Fulbright. |

Assumption College Continues
to GrowPhase Two of Construction has Begun
April, 2001—When the Board of Trustees at Assumption College approved
an increase in undergraduate enrollment from 1,850 to 2,150 as part of its
strategic plan to position the College for the next decade, it also recognized
the need for additional faculty and facilities. To meet these facility needs
on the 175-acre campus, Assumption is committing to a $40 million build out
of its physical plant.

Assumption College Presents a Lecture
on Genocide in Rwanda
March, 2000—Assumption College will present a lecture by Alison
Des Forges, entitled Confronting Horror: The Human Faces of Genocide
in Rwanda on Monday, March 19, 2001, at 7:00 p.m. in Assumption
College's Hagan Campus Center Hall. Alison Des Forges is the winner
of a 1999 MacArthur Fellowship, and directs research on Rwanda
and Burundi for Human Rights Watch.

High School Partner in Criminal Justice
March, 2000—The Center for Continuing and Professional Education
at Assumption College recently entered into partnership with Wachusett
Regional High School for students pursuing careers in the field
of Criminal Justice. Students who complete the Criminal Justice
Career Major at Wachusett Regional High School and who meet the
requirements for acceptance in the Center will be able to continue
their studies at Assumption College in the Criminal Justice programs
through the Center for Continuing and Professional Education.

Area College Students to Clean Up Worcester
March, 2000—Students of the Colleges of Worcester Consortium
will participate in the Seventh Annual Mayor's College Clean-Up
on Saturday, March 31, 2001, beginning at Assumption College's
Laska Gymnasium at 9:00 a.m. From Assumption, students will enter
into the Worcester community to clean up trash and debris in several
designated areas

renewal of its reaccreditation by the Commission on Institutions

January, 2001—Robert Doe, a senior at Assumption College,
will receive the 2000 Outstanding University of Transportation

Ballroom in Washington, DC on January 8, 2001.

December, 2000—Assumption College's Ecumenical Institute,
in conjunction with The Office of Ecumenical and Interreligious
Affairs of the Diocese of Worcester, and The Worcester County

to Feature the Harlem Rockets
October, 2000—Assumption College's student and athletic organizations
are hosting a campus-wide Midnight Madness Celebration from today,
Thursday, October 12 to Sunday, October 14, 2000, as the College
prepares for the opening of its basketball season. One highlight
of the weekend will feature the famous Harlem Rockets Comedy Basketball
Show playing against members of the Assumption community, including
faculty, staff, and students on Friday, October 13, at 7:30 p.m.

Assumption College Announces Efforts to
Improve the MCAS scores of Worcester Public School Student
October, 2000—In a recent speech, Lt. Governor Jane Swift
called for colleges in the state to help students prepare for
the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) Exams.
Assumption College has taken on this challenge by hosting the
newly developed SUCCESS Program. To help in their efforts to tutor
for MCAS, Assumption College has received an $18,000 grant from
the Massachusetts Campus Compact.

Assumption College Professor Returns from
the People's Republic of China
October, 2000—Dr. William B. Talley, Director of Assumption
College's Institute for Social and Rehabilitation Services, and
an Associate Professor in the Social Rehabilitation Department,
has just returned with an American delegation of rehabilitation
professionals who traveled to the People's Republic of China during
the first week of October as part of the "People to People
Ambassador Program."

Assumption College Students Become
Active in Local and National Politics
October, 2000—Assumption College has seen a recent surge in
political activism among it students, both at the local and the
national levels. Recently, the Assumption College Republicans were one of just
four schools that were able to volunteer at the first Presidential
Debate held in Boston on Oct. 3, 2000. The students were responsible
for escorting Governors from across the country through the maze
in the media room for interviews and commentary on the debate.

The lecture, entitled "How the High Cost of Drugs Affects
the Management of Health Care," will be given by Charles
F. Monahan, Jr., President of Massachusetts College of Pharmacy
and Health Services.

West Boylston Wal-Mart
awards Assumption College $5,000 for University Transportation Center
October, 2000—On Thursday, October 5, 2000 at 4: 00 p.m.,
the West Boylston Wal-Mart made an Environmental Grant to the
University Transportation Center (UTC) at Assumption College.
The grant underwrites the project being done by the 6th grade
at Worcester's Quinsigamond School, entitled "The Story Behind
the Blackstone." This project was one of nine that were funded
through the UTC in April. Those nine grants totaled $45,000.

October, 2000—Assumption College recently announced the
appointment of Dr. Mary Jane Rein as its first Director of Grants.
In this newly created position, Dr. Rein will work with faculty

to seek external funding for faculty and academic initiatives.

September, 2000—Assumption College has just received
final word that one of its Professors, R. Thomas Boone, Assistant
Professor of Psychology, will be appearing live on the national
CBS morning show, "The Early Show with Bryant Gumbel and
Jayne Clayson." The live interview is scheduled to take place
in the New York studios at 8:19 a.m. tomorrow morning, Thursday,
September 14.

Salisbury Street Sampler Launches Web
Site;
Annual Event to Attract Hundreds
September, 2000—On Saturday, September 16, 2000,
sixteen institutions will open their doors to the public for an
afternoon of free entertainment, refreshments, and tours.
Known as the Salisbury Street Sampler, this annual event began
four years ago as a way to attract the public to view the many
beautiful and world-renown institutions located along Salisbury
Street, which are not always accessible to the public.

Holy Cross Trustees to Visit New
Assumption College Residence Halls
September, 2000—Joining the long list of visitors to the
new residence halls at Assumption College, Holy Cross trustees
and college officials will tour the new facilities tomorrow, Friday,
September 8, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. Hailed by some as the newest trend in on-campus housing, the
luxury apartments completed over the summer months, opened for
occupancy on August 25. Many college's from across New England
have asked and been given tours of these new living conditions.

Assumption College installs "Best
Cappuccino Machine in the City"
New Coffee Bar to be renamed and dedicated on Tuesday
August, 2000—Students returning at the end of the month
will find it difficult to recall what the old space looked like.
Construction and renovation completed, the new student space in
the Campus Center has been transformed and renamed. What was formally
known as the "Junction," the old space held the campus
snack bar, which was often crowed with students looking for a
quick bite to eat between classes, or maybe an occasion group
trying to study amid the noise.

for computer training
August, 2000—Assumption College's Center for Continuing
Education has announced a new partnership with Spectrum Computer
Solutions of Plymouth, MA. Spectrum Computers will provide information
technology courses for the Center for Continuing and Professional
Education starting Fall 2000. The two courses being offered are
A+/PC Service & Support Specialist and
MCSE (Microsoft Certified System Engineers). |

Investigates Social Dilemmas
Has Implications for CBS Mega Television Hit "Survivor"/Research
August, 2000—Assumption College Professor Thomas Boone has been interested
in Social Psychology issues for years. His research has reflected that interest.
But now, his research is generating even more enthusiasm as the CBS Television
Hit "Survivor" publicly displays the very essence of social psychology;
forcing people to make choices between a better collective outcome or a better
personal outcome.

of Mario J. Silva to Director of Multicultural Affairs. In this position,
Mr. Silva will coordinate the College's efforts to attract students
from diverse backgrounds and to promote a campus climate that supports
the high achievement and success of African-, Asian-, Latino-, and
Native-American (ALANA) students at Assumption College. |
"Songs of Praise:
The Psalms in Our Time"
June, 2001—The Assumption College Ecumenical Institute is
sponsoring a weeklong lecture series on the psalms from June 24, 2001
to June 29, 2001 entitled "Songs of Praise: The Psalms in Our Time."
Lectures will take place in the Hagan Campus Center and masses will
take place in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. The keynote speaker for
this lecture series will be William Holladay, Professor Emeritus at
the Andover Newton Theological School. |

to Present Three Awards for Outstanding Recognition
June, 2001—The Alumni Association of Assumption College
will give three awards during its annual Reunion Weekend on Saturday,
June 9, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. in the President's Garden. The three award
recipients will be: Bro. Armand Lemaire , A.A. (Class of 1948), receiving
the Jack Bresciani Outstanding Alumnus Award; Dr. Michael True, professor
emeritus of English, receiving the Honorary Alumnus Award; and Maurice
Boisvert (Class of 1966), receiving the Outstanding Achievement Award. |
