Assumption College's University Transportation Center to Sponsor Transportation Career Fair
May, 2001This Friday, May 25, 2001, The University Transportation Center at Assumption College will be hosting a Transportation Career Expo at Union Station. The Expo is designed for middle and high school students to explore how almost 10 million Americans are involved in keeping our nation on the move. The event is being organized to help youngsters become award of the career possibilities in one of the largest industries in the nation.

Assumption College Senior Receives a Fulbright Scholarship
May, 2001—Janine Rock, a senior at Assumption College and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Rock of Tewksbury, Massachusetts, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Spain for the 2001-2002 academic year. She is the second of two Assumption College women that have received this prestigious award. It is the first time in the history of Assumption College that a student has ever received a Fulbright.

Assumption College Announces Two Fulbright Scholarships

Assumption College to Sponsor the 6th Annual Student Research Colloquium
April, 2001—Assumption College will sponsor its 6th Annual Student Research Colloquium on Tuesday, April 24, 2001, during two sessions of 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The morning session will be held in the lobby of Charlie's, located in the Hagan Campus Center, and the afternoon session in La Maison Francaise's Salon.

Assumption College Hosts Open House
April, 2001—Assumption College will host their annual Open House, meant for prospective students who have been accepted for the incoming Fall 2001 freshman class, tomorrow, Sunday, April 8, 2001.

Gandhi Scholar to Speak at Assumption College
April, 2001—Dr. Naresh Dadhich, professor of Political Science at the University of Rajasthan, India, will speak on "GandhiÕs Influence and India Today" Monday, April 9, at 7:00p.m.

Assumption College Continues to Grow—Phase Two of Construction has Begun
April, 2001—When the Board of Trustees at Assumption College approved an increase in undergraduate enrollment from 1,850 to 2,150 as part of its strategic plan to position the College for the next decade, it also recognized the need for additional faculty and facilities. To meet these facility needs on the 175-acre campus, Assumption is committing to a $40 million build out of its physical plant.

Assumption College to Sponsor Lecture of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
March, 2000—Assumption College's Office of Student Life will be sponsoring a lecture by Dr. Bruce Bridges, entitled "Dr. Martin Luther King: Reflections of the Past, Vision of the Future," on Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at 7:00 p.m. in the Hagan Campus Center Hall.

Assumption College Presents a Lecture on Genocide in Rwanda
March, 2000—Assumption College will present a lecture by Alison Des Forges, entitled Confronting Horror: The Human Faces of Genocide in Rwanda on Monday, March 19, 2001, at 7:00 p.m. in Assumption College's Hagan Campus Center Hall. Alison Des Forges is the winner of a 1999 MacArthur Fellowship, and directs research on Rwanda and Burundi for Human Rights Watch.

Walking Lecture Tour of Union Station Sponsored by Assumption College
March, 2000—Assumption College's University Transportation Center (UTC), with its theme of "Transportation and Environmental Education for the Twenty-First Century," is sponsoring "The Restoration of a Classic"-a walking lecture tour of Worcester's Union Station-by Charles Sacre on Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. Charles Sacre, associate partner of SEA Consultants, Inc.

Assumption College and Wachusett Regional High School Partner in Criminal Justice
March, 2000—The Center for Continuing and Professional Education at Assumption College recently entered into partnership with Wachusett Regional High School for students pursuing careers in the field of Criminal Justice. Students who complete the Criminal Justice Career Major at Wachusett Regional High School and who meet the requirements for acceptance in the Center will be able to continue their studies at Assumption College in the Criminal Justice programs through the Center for Continuing and Professional Education.

Area College Students to Clean Up Worcester
March, 2000—Students of the Colleges of Worcester Consortium will participate in the Seventh Annual Mayor's College Clean-Up on Saturday, March 31, 2001, beginning at Assumption College's Laska Gymnasium at 9:00 a.m. From Assumption, students will enter into the Worcester community to clean up trash and debris in several designated areas

26 Assumption College Students to Participate in Spring Break Mission Program
March, 2001—For the week of Spring Break (March 5-9, 2001), 26 students from Assumption College will participate in the College's Spring Break Mission Program, in which the students, comprised of four groups, will volunteer at mission locations in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Greater Philadelphia, and Baltimore.

Rare Russian Icons on Display at Assumption College
March, 2001—The March d'Alzon Arts Exhibition will open on Monday, March
12 with a rare display of Russian Icons.

Assumption College to host Annual Rabbi Joseph Klein Lecture
March, 2001—Assumption College's annual Rabbi Joseph Klein Lecture will take place this coming Wednesday, March 14, at 7:00 p.m. in Hagan Center Hall. The lecture is open to the public at no charge.

Public Invited to Submit Comments for Assumption College Reaccreditation
February, 2001—Assumption College is undergoing renewal of its reaccreditation by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (CIHE) of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). A team representing the commission will visit the Assumption College campus April 1-4, 2001.

Assumption College to host 3 day discussion on the "War on Drugs"
January, 2001—On Monday, January 29 through Wednesday, January 31, Assumption College will be the site of a three-day seminar that will discuss the topic "From Medellin to Main South: Are We Winning the 'War on Drugs?'"

Assumption College Student Receives the 2000 Outstanding Student of Year from the U.S. Department of Transportation
January, 2001—Robert Doe, a senior at Assumption College, will receive the 2000 Outstanding University of Transportation Center (UTC) Student of the Year from the U.S. Department of Transportation at an award ceremony to be held at the Omni Shoreham's Regency Ballroom in Washington, DC on January 8, 2001.

Assumption College announces Conference on Dominus Jesus
December, 2000—Assumption College's Ecumenical Institute, in conjunction with The Office of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs of the Diocese of Worcester, and The Worcester County Ecumenical Council will be presenting a conference on Dominus Jesus: On the Unicity and Salvific Universality of Jesus Christ and the Church. The conference will be held in the Hagan Center Hall on Thursday, February 1, 2001, at 4:30 p.m.

Assumption College to Sponsor AIDS Quilt Display
November, 2000—On Tuesday, November 28, 2000, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Assumption College's Omicron Delta Kappa (the National Leadership Society) and the Social and Rehabilitation Club will sponsor a display of the "NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt" in the Plourde Recreation Center's gymnasium.

Assumption College to Sponsor Lecture on the Blackstone River Valley
November, 2000—Assumption College's University Transportation Center (UTC) will sponsor a lecture by Michael Creasey, entitled "How'd You Get Here? The Transportation Revolution in the Blackstone Valley as a Social Revolution." The lecture will take place on Wednesday, December 6, 2000, at 7:00 p.m. in La Maison Francaise's Salon.

November, 2000—Assumption College's Beck Institute for Cognitive Studies will sponsor a workshop by Dr. Leonard A. Doerfler, entitled "Brief Interventions for the Addictions." The workshop will take place on Friday, December 1, 2000, from 1:00-4:30 p.m., in La Maison Francaise's Salon.

Assumption College to Host a Middle School Science Olympiad
November, 2000—Assumption College's Department of Natural Science will be hosting a middle school Science Olympiad on Saturday, December 2, 2000, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Kennedy Science Building.

Sexual Predators is Topic of Symposium at Assumption College
November, 2000—Assumption College's Center for Continuing and Professional Education will sponsor a Criminal Justice Symposium, "Why Can't We Protect Our Children: Sexual Predators Within Our Communities," on Friday, November 10, 2000, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Hagan Campus Center Hall. A keynote address will be delivered by Hon. Suzanne V. DelVecchio, Chief Justice of Massachusetts Superior Court.

Red Sox Legend Rico Petrocelli to speak on the Sports Industry at Assumption College
November, 2000—On Wednesday, November 1, 2000, Rico Petrocelli will appear in the Industrial Organization class of Assumption College professor Demetrius Kantarelis to talk on various aspect of the sports industry.

Topic of Assumption College Lecture to Be on the Blackstone River Watershed
November, 2000—Assumption College's University Transportation Center will be sponsoring a lecture on Monday, November 6, 2000 at 7:00 p.m. by Donna Williams, entitled "The Blackstone River Watershed Awareness Campaign." The lecture will take place in La Maison Francaise's Salon.

D'Alzon Visiting Professor of Political Science at Assumption College Gives Annual Lecture
October, 2000—The d'Alzon Visiting Professor of Political Science at Assumption College, Dr. David Lowenthal, will be giving the annual d'Alzon lecture on Thursday, November 16 at 7:00 PM. The lecture entitled "Lost in the Cosmos? Mind and Purpose in a World of Chance," will take place in La Maison Francaise's Salon.

"Psychology, Religion, and the Care of Souls"
October, 2000—Assumption College's Beck Institute for Cognitive Studies will sponsor a lecture entitled "Psychology, Religion, and the Care of Souls," which will be given by Dr. Wayne G. Rollins on Wednesday, November 8, 2000 , from 2:00-5:00 p.m. in the Salon of La Maison Francaise.

Assumption College's "Midnight Madness Celebration" to Feature the Harlem Rockets
October, 2000—Assumption College's student and athletic organizations are hosting a campus-wide Midnight Madness Celebration from today, Thursday, October 12 to Sunday, October 14, 2000, as the College prepares for the opening of its basketball season. One highlight of the weekend will feature the famous Harlem Rockets Comedy Basketball Show playing against members of the Assumption community, including faculty, staff, and students on Friday, October 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Plourde Recreation Center.

Assumption College Announces Efforts to Improve the MCAS scores of Worcester Public School Student
October, 2000—In a recent speech, Lt. Governor Jane Swift called for colleges in the state to help students prepare for the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) Exams. Assumption College has taken on this challenge by hosting the newly developed SUCCESS Program. To help in their efforts to tutor for MCAS, Assumption College has received an $18,000 grant from the Massachusetts Campus Compact.

Assumption College Professor Returns from the People's Republic of China
October, 2000—Dr. William B. Talley, Director of Assumption College's Institute for Social and Rehabilitation Services, and an Associate Professor in the Social Rehabilitation Department, has just returned with an American delegation of rehabilitation professionals who traveled to the People's Republic of China during the first week of October as part of the "People to People Ambassador Program."

Assumption College Students Become Active in Local and National Politics
October, 2000—Assumption College has seen a recent surge in political activism among it students, both at the local and the national levels. Recently, the Assumption College Republicans were one of just four schools that were able to volunteer at the first Presidential Debate held in Boston on Oct. 3, 2000. The students were responsible for escorting Governors from across the country through the maze in the media room for interviews and commentary on the debate.

Assumption College to Sponsor Lecture on Surrealism and Art
October, 2000—Assumption College's Center for Continuing and Professional Education will sponsor an art lecture on Thursday, November 2, 2000 at 6:30 p.m. in La Maison Francaise's Auditorium. The lecture, entitled "Surrealism: Psychology in Art," will be given by John Murphey, Art Professor in the College's Continuing Education division.

High Cost of Drugs and Health Care Management to be Topic of Assumption College Lecture
October, 2000—Assumption College's Center for Continuing and Professional Education will sponsor a health care lecture on Monday, October 30, 2000 at 6:30 p.m. in La Maison Francaise's Salon. The lecture, entitled "How the High Cost of Drugs Affects the Management of Health Care," will be given by Charles F. Monahan, Jr., President of Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services.

West Boylston Wal-Mart awards Assumption College $5,000 for University Transportation Center
October, 2000—On Thursday, October 5, 2000 at 4: 00 p.m., the West Boylston Wal-Mart made an Environmental Grant to the University Transportation Center (UTC) at Assumption College. The grant underwrites the project being done by the 6th grade at Worcester's Quinsigamond School, entitled "The Story Behind the Blackstone." This project was one of nine that were funded through the UTC in April. Those nine grants totaled $45,000.

Assumption College to Sponsor Lecture on Women's Rights
October, 2000—To prepare for the upcoming citywide celebration of the first National Women's Rights Convention, the Assumption College Women's Studies Program offered a presentation by Professor John McClymer on "The Origins of the Women's Rights Movement."

Assumption College's d'Alzon Library Kicks Off a Series of Art Exhibitions
October, 2000—Assumption College's d'Alzon Library kicks off a new monthly series of art exhibitions with a display of "paintings informed by the depositions of Christ" by Nancy Flanagan. Her show will run until October 31.

Assumption College to Sponsor Debates for both State Senate and Representative races in Worcester
October, 2000—Assumption College sponsored two debates, one each for the Senate race in the 10th Worcester District and the Representative race for the 13th Worcester District.

Assumption College Announces the Appointment of a New Director of Grants
October, 2000—Assumption College recently announced the appointment of Dr. Mary Jane Rein as its first Director of Grants. In this newly created position, Dr. Rein will work with faculty and the Offices of Academic Affairs and Institutional Advancement to seek external funding for faculty and academic initiatives.

Two Assumption College Professors Selected as Emeriti Professors
September, 2000—Assumption College recently announced that two of its professors have been selected as Professor Emeriti: Dr. Charles W. Estus, Sr. was named Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Dr. Hubert G. Meunier, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry.

Assumption College Professor to be Featured on CBS's"The Early Show with Bryant Gumbel and Jayne Clayson"
September, 2000—Assumption College has just received final word that one of its Professors, R. Thomas Boone, Assistant Professor of Psychology, will be appearing live on the national CBS morning show, "The Early Show with Bryant Gumbel and Jayne Clayson." The live interview is scheduled to take place in the New York studios at 8:19 a.m. tomorrow morning, Thursday, September 14.

Pulitzer Prize-Winning Poet W.D. Snodgrass to Read at Assumption College
September, 2000—Pulitzer Prize-winning poet W.D. Snodgrass will give a reading of his work at Assumption College on Wednesday, September 20, 2000, at 7:00 p.m. in the Hagan Campus Center Hall.

Assumption College's Center for the Continuing and Professional Education to Offer "Tricks of the Trade: Communications Careers in the 21st Century"
September, 2000—The Center for Continuing and Professional Education at Assumption College will offer a presentation on "Tricks of the Trade: Communications Careers in the 21st Century" on Tuesday, September 26, 2000, at 6:30 p.m. in La Maison Francaise's Salon.

Assumption College Athletes Take Time Out for Reflection
September, 2000—On Wednesday, September 13, Assumption College Varsity Athletes and Coaches will take time out from their schedules for reflection on their Christian faith. This is the third year athletes and coaches have had a designated time for spiritual reflection on their faith.

Salisbury Street Sampler Launches Web Site; Annual Event to Attract Hundreds
September, 2000—On Saturday, September 16, 2000, sixteen institutions will open their doors to the public for an afternoon of free entertainment, refreshments, and tours. Known as the Salisbury Street Sampler, this annual event began four years ago as a way to attract the public to view the many beautiful and world-renown institutions located along Salisbury Street, which are not always accessible to the public.

Holy Cross Trustees to Visit New Assumption College Residence Halls
September, 2000—Joining the long list of visitors to the new residence halls at Assumption College, Holy Cross trustees and college officials will tour the new facilities tomorrow, Friday, September 8, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. Hailed by some as the newest trend in on-campus housing, the luxury apartments completed over the summer months, opened for occupancy on August 25. Many college's from across New England have asked and been given tours of these new living conditions.

Assumption College installs "Best Cappuccino Machine in the City"
New Coffee Bar to be renamed and dedicated on Tuesday

August, 2000—Students returning at the end of the month will find it difficult to recall what the old space looked like. Construction and renovation completed, the new student space in the Campus Center has been transformed and renamed. What was formally known as the "Junction," the old space held the campus snack bar, which was often crowed with students looking for a quick bite to eat between classes, or maybe an occasion group trying to study amid the noise.

Assumption College announces partnership for computer training
August, 2000—Assumption College's Center for Continuing Education has announced a new partnership with Spectrum Computer Solutions of Plymouth, MA. Spectrum Computers will provide information technology courses for the Center for Continuing and Professional Education starting Fall 2000. The two courses being offered are A+/PC Service & Support Specialist and MCSE (Microsoft Certified System Engineers).

Assumption College Professor's Research Investigates Social Dilemmas Has Implications for CBS Mega Television Hit "Survivor"/Research
August, 2000—Assumption College Professor Thomas Boone has been interested in Social Psychology issues for years. His research has reflected that interest. But now, his research is generating even more enthusiasm as the CBS Television Hit "Survivor" publicly displays the very essence of social psychology; forcing people to make choices between a better collective outcome or a better personal outcome.

Assumption College Offers Character and Ethics Seminar
July, 2001—In keeping with its commitment to provide an education based on character and civility, Assumption College is hosting a two-week Character and Ethics Summer Institute during the weeks of July 16-27.

July, 2001—Assumption College's Plourde Recreation Center will host its first Rotten Sneaker Contest Friday, July 13th at 2:30 p.m.

Assumption College Announces New Director of Multicultural Affairs
July, 2001—Assumption College recently announced the appointment of Mario J. Silva to Director of Multicultural Affairs. In this position, Mr. Silva will coordinate the College's efforts to attract students from diverse backgrounds and to promote a campus climate that supports the high achievement and success of African-, Asian-, Latino-, and Native-American (ALANA) students at Assumption College.

"Songs of Praise: The Psalms in Our Time"
June, 2001—The Assumption College Ecumenical Institute is sponsoring a weeklong lecture series on the psalms from June 24, 2001 to June 29, 2001 entitled "Songs of Praise: The Psalms in Our Time." Lectures will take place in the Hagan Campus Center and masses will take place in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. The keynote speaker for this lecture series will be William Holladay, Professor Emeritus at the Andover Newton Theological School.

Assumption College's Alumni Association to Present Three Awards for Outstanding Recognition
June, 2001—The Alumni Association of Assumption College will give three awards during its annual Reunion Weekend on Saturday, June 9, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. in the President's Garden. The three award recipients will be: Bro. Armand Lemaire , A.A. (Class of 1948), receiving the Jack Bresciani Outstanding Alumnus Award; Dr. Michael True, professor emeritus of English, receiving the Honorary Alumnus Award; and Maurice Boisvert (Class of 1966), receiving the Outstanding Achievement Award.

Assumption College Approves New Trustees
June, 2001—The Assumption College Board of Trustees recently approved seven individuals for three-year terms on the board.
