Assumption College's University Transportation Center to Sponsor Transportation Career Fair
May, 2001–This Friday, May 25, 2001, The University Transportation Center at Assumption College will be hosting a Transportation Career Expo at Union Station. The Expo is designed for middle and high school students to explore how almost 10 million Americans are involved in keeping our nation on the move. The event is being organized to help youngsters become award of the career possibilities in one of the largest industries in the nation.

Assumption College Senior Receives a Fulbright Scholarship
May, 2001–Janine Rock, a senior at Assumption College and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Rock of Tewksbury, Massachusetts, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Spain for the 2001-2002 academic year. She is the second of two Assumption College women that have received this prestigious award. It is the first time in the history of Assumption College that a student has ever received a Fulbright.

Assumption College Continues to Grow—Phase Two of Construction has Begun
April, 2001–When the Board of Trustees at Assumption College approved an increase in undergraduate enrollment from 1,850 to 2,150 as part of its strategic plan to position the College for the next decade, it also recognized the need for additional faculty and facilities. To meet these facility needs on the 175-acre campus, Assumption is committing to a $40 million build out of its physical plant.

Assumption College Presents a Lecture on Genocide in Rwanda
March, 2000-
Assumption College will present a lecture by Alison Des Forges, entitled Confronting Horror: The Human Faces of Genocide in Rwanda on Monday, March 19, 2001, at 7:00 p.m. in Assumption College's Hagan Campus Center Hall. Alison Des Forges is the winner of a 1999 MacArthur Fellowship, and directs research on Rwanda and Burundi for Human Rights Watch.

Public Invited to Submit Comments for Assumption College Reaccreditation
February, 2001-Assumption College is undergoing renewal of its reaccreditation by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (CIHE) of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). A team representing the commission will visit the Assumption College campus April 1-4, 2001.

Assumption College Student Receives the 2000 Outstanding Student of Year from the U.S. Department of Transportation
January, 2001-
Robert Doe, a senior at Assumption College, will receive the 2000 Outstanding University of Transportation Center (UTC) Student of the Year from the U.S. Department of Transportation at an award ceremony to be held at the Omni Shoreham's Regency Ballroom in Washington, DC on January 8, 2001.

Assumption College announces Conference on Dominus Jesus

Assumption College Announces Efforts to Improve the MCAS scores of Worcester Public School Student
October, 2000-
In a recent speech, Lt. Governor Jane Swift called for colleges in the state to help students prepare for the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) Exams. Assumption College has taken on this challenge by hosting the newly developed SUCCESS Program. To help in their efforts to tutor for MCAS, Assumption College has received an $18,000 grant from the Massachusetts Campus Compact.

Assumption College Professor Returns from the People's Republic of China

-Dr. William B. Talley, Director of Assumption College's Institute for Social and Rehabilitation Services, and an Associate Professor in the Social Rehabilitation Department, has just returned with an American delegation of rehabilitation professionals who traveled to the People's Republic of China during the first week of October as part of the "People to People Ambassador Program."

Assumption College Students Become Active in Local and National Politics

-Assumption College has seen a recent surge in political activism among it students, both at the local and the national levels.

Recently, the Assumption College Republicans were one of just four schools that were able to volunteer at the first Presidential Debate held in Boston on Oct. 3, 2000. The students were responsible for escorting Governors from across the country through the maze in the media room for interviews and commentary on the debate.

High Cost of Drugs and Health Care Management

Assumption College's Center for Continuing and Professional Education will sponsor a health care lecture on Monday, October 30, 2000 at 6:30 p.m. in La Maison Francaise's Salon. The lecture, entitled "How the High Cost of Drugs Affects the Management of Health Care," will be given by Charles F. Monahan, Jr., President of Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services.

West Boylston Wal-Mart awards Assumption College $5,000 for University Transportation Center
October, 2000-
On Thursday, October 5, 2000 at 4: 00 p.m., the West Boylston Wal-Mart made an Environmental Grant to the University Transportation Center (UTC) at Assumption College. The grant underwrites the project being done by the 6th grade at Worcester's Quinsigamond School, entitled "The Story Behind the Blackstone." This project was one of nine that were funded through the UTC in April. Those nine grants totaled $45,000.

- To prepare for the upcoming citywide celebration of the first National Women's Rights Convention, the Assumption College Women's Studies Program offered a presentation by Professor John McClymer on "The Origins of the Women's Rights Movement."

Assumption College's d'Alzon Library Kicks Off a Series of Art Exhibitions
October, 2000-Assumption College's d'Alzon Library kicks off a new monthly series of art exhibitions with a display of "paintings informed by the depositions of Christ" by Nancy Flanagan. Her show will run until October 31.

Assumption College to Sponsor Debates for both State Senate and Representative races in Worcester

Assumption College sponsored two debates, one each for the Senate race in the 10th Worcester District and the Representative race for the 13th Worcester District.

ASSUMPTION COLLEGE ANNOUNCES THE APPOINTMENT

October, 2000-Assumption College recently announced the appointment of Dr. Mary Jane Rein as its first Director of Grants. "The Early Show with Bryant Gumbel and Jayne Clayson"

Professor Thomas Boone to appear live tomorrow morning

September, 2000-Assumption College has just received final word that one of its Professors, R. Thomas Boone, Assistant Professor of Psychology, will be appearing live on the national CBS morning show, "The Early Show with Bryant Gumbel and Jayne Clayson." The live interview is scheduled to take place in the New York studios at 8:19 a.m. tomorrow morning, Thursday, September 14.

Professor Boone will be featured because of his use of the CBS TV hit "Survivor" in his classroom instruction. This semester, Professor Boone will be utilizing various aspects of the show to illustrate the phenomenon of social psychology and to demonstrate certain social dilemmas. PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING POET W.D. SNODGRASS
TO READ AT ASSUMPTION COLLEGE

September, 2000-Pulitzer Prize-winning poet W.D. Snodgrass will give a reading of his work at Assumption College on Wednesday, September 20, 2000, at 7:00 p.m. in the Hagan Campus Center Hall.

Snodgrass is the author of more than twenty books, including essays, plays, and translations, as well as his poetry. His first volume of poetry, Heart's Needle, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1960. His most recent titles are Selected Translations (BOA Editions, 1998) and Spring Suite (Nadja Press, 1994).

Salisbury Street Sampler Launches Web site
Annual Event to Attract Hundreds

September, 2000­On Saturday, September 16, 2000, sixteen institutions will open their doors to the public for an afternoon of free entertainment, refreshments, and tours. Known as the Salisbury Street Sampler, this annual event began four years ago as a way to attract the public to view the many beautiful and world-renown institutions located along Salisbury Street, which are not always accessible to the public.

Holy Cross Trustees to Visit New Assumption College Residence Halls
September, 2000- Joining the long list of visitors to the new residence halls at Assumption College, Holy Cross trustees and college officials will tour the new facilities tomorrow, Friday, September 8, 2000 at 2:00 p.m.

Hailed by some as the newest trend in on-campus housing, the luxury apartments completed over the summer months, opened for occupancy on August 25. Many college's from across New England have asked and been given tours of these new living conditions.

Assumption College installs "Best Cappuccino Machine in the City"
New Coffee Bar to be renamed and dedicated on Tuesday

August, 2000-Students returning at the end of the month will find it difficult to recall what the old space looked like. Construction and renovation completed, the new student space in the Campus Center has been transformed and renamed. What was formally known as the "Junction," the old space held the campus snack bar, which was often crowed with students looking for a quick bite to eat between classes, or maybe an occasion group trying to study amid the noise.

Assumption College announces partnership for computer training
August, 2000-Assumption College's Center for Continuing Education has announced a new partnership with Spectrum Computer Solutions of Plymouth, MA. Spectrum Computers will provide information technology courses for the Center for Continuing and Professional Education starting Fall 2000. The two courses being offered are:
A+/PC Service & Support Specialist and
MCSE (Microsoft Certified System Engineers).

Assumption College -Involved in Latino Community
July, 2000-Recently, two outstanding brothers from the Worcester Latino Community graduated from Assumption College. Angel Luis Rodriguez and Luis Angel Rodriguez received their diplomas from Assumption in May, both of them graduating with a degree in Social and Rehabilitation Services. Angel and Luis attended Assumption through the John S. Laws Institute, a program to empower talented but under-served, low-income high school youth from culturally diverse backgrounds in becoming leaders in their community.

Last day of Assumption College Recreational Greyhound Camp
July 2000
- Today, Friday, July 28, 2000 is the last day of a three-week Recreational Greyhound Camp at Assumption College. To celebrate, the camp staff have set up various activities, which will include a lunch-time concert for the campers and entire college community. The Concert will be by local artist Ken Baxter, who is also a Worcester Firefighter.

Assumption College Adds New Programs of Study
Classes to begin in Fall 2000
June, 2000- Assumption College has announced the addition of two new major courses of study and a new minor, all of which were recently approved by the Board of Trustees. In addition to the already existing programs, students can now choose to major in Latin American Studies or Visual Arts. In addition, a minor in Community Service Learning has also been added.

Assumption College Presents West Hartford Resident with the Honorary Alumnus Award
June, 2000-
Assumption College presented the Honorary Alumnus Award to Dr. Wayne G. Rollins of (75 Craigmoor Rd.) West Hartford, CT at its recent Reunion Weekend. Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Rollins has been involved with Assumption College as the Director of the Ecumenical Institute from 1976-93, and he was awarded a full-year sabbatical for research as Visiting Scholar in 1996. Currently, he holds the position of Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies in the Department of Theology.

Athletic Director of the Year Award Given to Assumption College
June, 2000-
Rita Castagna, Assumption College's Athletic Director, was recently recognized by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics as one of the 1999-2000 NACDA/Continental Airlines Regional Athletic Directors of the Year. Assumption College competes in the Northeast 10 Conference and is a NCAA Division II school.

Dismas House Announces Sr. Helen Prejean as Keynote Speaker

-On November 4, 2000, Sr. Helen Prejean will be visiting Assumption College as the keynote speaker for a Dismas House fundraising dinner. The event will take place in the Taylor Dining Hall on Assumption's campus.

Assumption College Presents Fitchburg Native with the Outstanding Achievement Award
June, 2000-
The Honorable Judge Andre A. Gelinas '60 of (689 High Rock Rd.) Fitchburg, MA, received the 2000 Outstanding Achievement Award from Assumption College at its recent Reunion Weekend. Judge Gelinas, Associate Justice of Appeals Court, has broad vision, untiring energy, skillful mediation, and is a valued counselor of Bar and Bench. Judge Gelinas is also an outstanding community leader in the fields of art, education, and medical care.

Assumption College Presents Holden Resident with the Jack L. Bresciani Outstanding Alumnus Award
June, 2000-
Assumption College Alumni Association recently honored John J. DiPietro '72 of (70 Timber Lane) Holden, MA, with the Jack L. Bresciani Outstanding Alumnus Award at Reunion Weekend. Among his accomplishments, Mr. DiPietro has been involved with Assumption as the Director of Public Affairs from 1973-75, the Director of Alumni Relations from 1975-78, and he was President of the Alumni Association from 1993-95. Mr. DiPietro owns Advanced Business Concepts/DiPietro located in Holden, MA.

The evening schedule for Assumption College's Summer Ecumenical Institute has been announced. The following events will take place from Sunday, June 25 to Friday, June 30, 2000. These events provide an ecumenical and contemporary perspective on the topic of this year's Summer Insitutute, "Saint Augustine: Pastor at the Dawn of a New Millennium." The Institute will also mark the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Augustinians of the Assumption, who sponsor the College.

Second Annual Assumption College Cystic Fibrosis Road Race to take place Sunday
May, 2000-
Over a year ago, current Assumption College Junior and cystic fibrosis victim, Bobby Burgohlzer began a phenomenal project. With his roommates, he decided to bring attention to this disease that has plagued him since birth. In a recent speech that he gave, he talked not only of his struggle with this disease, but how he could not have achieved this goal without the support from the Assumption College community.

After the incredible success of his first Road Race event where he raised $10,000, Bobby knew he needed to continue this fight. Ironically, he enrolled in Professor Lucia Knoles, Ph.D. Speech Class and found the team he needed to make this Road Race an Annual Event. The requirements of the Speech Class are not as they may seem on the surface. Yes, you work on your communication skills, but it is how you use those skills that is most important. Mr. Reynolds has a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Religion from St. Andrews Presbyterian College, and a Masters in Theology from Boston University School of Theology.

FOR THE 2000-2002 ACADEMIC YEARS

Assumption College is pleased to announce the recent appointment of Dr. David Lowenthal as the d'Alzon Professor for the next two academic years.

Dr. Lowenthal, a resident of Princeton, MA, received his Master of Arts and Ph.D. from the New School for Social Research. He has taught political philosophy and allied subjects at Boston College for the past thirty-five years.

Blackstone River Valley Agencies Receive Money
from Assumption College

May, 2000-On Friday, April 28, Assumption College's University Transportation Center (UTC) announced nine recipients in a first round of grant awards totaling more than $45,000. The ceremony was held on Assumption's campus.

Of the nine recipients, four of them are concerned with the impact that transportation has on the environment in and around the Blackstone River Valley.

Central Falls High School Receives Money from
Assumption College

May, 2000-On Friday, April 28, Assumption College's University Transportation Center (UTC) announced nine recipients in a first round of grant awards totaling more than $45,000. The ceremony was held on Assumption's campus.

One of the nine recipients, the Central Falls High School of Central Falls, RI, will receive a grant of $5,995 in order to support student-teacher collaboration in the production of an interactive CD-ROM for use in the primary and middle school grades and libraries throughout the Blackstone River Valley Corridor. The interdisciplinary effort between the Chemistry, Life Sciences, Biology and Social Studies areas will produce a historic, scientific and technical examination of the interaction between the technology of transportation and the effects it has had on the environment and history of the Blackstone River Valley.
