Assumption, Worcester Public Schools Announce Major Scholarship Program
Worcester, MA (Dec. 8, 2005) - Dr. Thomas R. Plough, President of Assumption College, has announced a significant commitment to the students of the Worcester Public Schools through the establishment of a new scholarship program. The Assumption College-Worcester Public Schools Small Learning Communities Scholarship is for students in the 17 academies that were created from the transformation of the Worcester Public high schools into Small Schools. The total commitment after the first four years of this fund will amount to more than a half of a million dollars per year to Worcester Public School students.
WPS high school seniors, beginning with the class of 2006, who graduate from one of the city’s 17 Small Schools will be eligible to apply for one of the eight four-year renewable scholarships. The amount of the scholarships, based on scholastic merit, will range from $11,000 to $16,000 bringing the total commitment, by year four, to a potential high of over $500,000 per year. Merit will be based on a combination of SAT test scores and the students’ grade point average. These are in addition to the scholarship Assumption College already offers students at Doherty High School.
President Plough (pictured above (l) with Dr. James A. Caradonio (r), Superintendent, Worcester Public Schools) said the decision to focus on Worcester’s Small Schools was made to encourage the students and support the Worcester Public School initiative. “The students in Worcester’s small schools work hard to meet the small school goal to qualify for college. Hopefully, these scholarships will be an additional incentive for them to work hard. The administration and the faculty of the Small Schools have developed a culture that encourages and expects each and every student to succeed. That culture is also found at Assumption College and we want those students here.”
Timothy Murray, Mayor and Chairman of the Worcester School Committee was not able to attend the meeting but released a statement. "I am thrilled that Assumption College, under the leadership of President Plough, has stepped up to the plate once again as a champion of education for Worcester's youth," Murray said. "Part of the mission of the Small Learning Communities is to personalize education between the students and the teachers. Assumption College's dedication to the Worcester Public Schools demonstrates a personal commitment that will be felt by the deserving students who will benefit infinitely from these scholarships," said Murray.
Dr. James A. Caradonio, Superintendent, Worcester Public Schools, said these new scholarships are a major opportunity for the students attending the 17 academies. “The transforming of our high schools focuses on the new three R’s--Rigor, Relevancy and Relationships--that our students, citizens of the 21st century, will need to learn and master. Assumption’s commitment to our students shows that they understand that our students have succeeded in more challenging courses and are prepared to succeed at Assumption College.”
The announcement was made to WPS principals and guidance councilors at a regularly scheduled meeting. The administrators were briefed on how students may apply for the scholarships.
