Andrew Themeles '05 Receives Prestigious Scholarship as Legislative Intern

October, 2004—Andrew Themeles ’05 was recently chosen as a recipient of the Arthur R. Lambert Memorial Scholarship for Massachusetts legislative interns. This prestigious award is given to a student who exemplifies a sense of strong moral values, a working knowledge of state government, and a dedicated commitment to public service.

Themeles, a Political Science major from Westford, MA, spent his summer interning in the office of Massachusetts State Senator Steven Panagiotakos. During this internship, he gained an inside glimpse into the world of politics. He was able to sit in on meetings with various committees and the senator’s Chief of Staff. He also participated in an intern seminar program, which gave legislative interns the opportunity to attend lectures with several speakers, the most prominent being Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

“My summer at the State House was an unbelievable experience,” said Themeles. “I am still on great terms with the staff there, and I would really like to work there as a legislative aide once I graduate.”

The awarding of this scholarship to Themeles had significant meaning to Assumption College. Arthur R. Lambert, an Assumption alumnus from the Class of 1985, dedicated many years to public service in Massachusetts before his untimely death in an automobile accident in December of 2000. Lambert’s family chose to remember their loved one through this scholarship, which is awarded to qualified Massachusetts legislative summer interns upon completion of their service.

Themeles has been active in the Student Government Association (SGA) throughout his four years at Assumption, currently serving on the SGA Executive Committee as Senate Speaker. He hopes to pursue a career in state politics upon graduation in May 2005.
