Symposium:
"Aftershocks: Earthquakes and Divine Providence"
April, 2005—Assumption College presents a
symposium, "Aftershocks: Earthquakes and Divine Providence"
on Thursday, April 28, 2005, in recognition of the 250th anniversary
of the Lisbon earthquake and in remembrance of the Indian Ocean
tsunami.
The program includes afternoon presentations and questions at 3:30
p.m. and a roundtable discussion at 7:00 p.m., both taking place
in the Salon of La Maison Francaise. A panel of three scholars will
make the afternoon presentations and engage the evening discussion:
Daniel Gordon, professor of History at UMass Amherst and the editor
and translator of Voltaire's Candide; Victor Gourevitch,
emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Wesleyan University, who has
published widely on Jean-Jacques Rousseau; and Fr. George H. Tavard,
A.A., author of over 50 books in theology and ecumenism, and emeritus
Professor at The Methodist School of Theology in Ohio.
