Assumption Honors Cathleen Stutz as Massachusetts Professor of the Year
Worcester, MA (December 11, 2006) - Cathleen K. Stutz, Ed.D., assistant professor of Education at Assumption College, was honored as the 2006 Massachusetts Professor of the Year at a ceremony held in the Richard and Janet Testa Science Center on December 11.
Established in 1981 by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the U.S. Professor of the Year Program salutes the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country—those who excel as teachers and influence the lives and careers of their students. Dr. Stutz officially received her award at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on November 16.
Selected from among nearly 300 top professors in the United States, Dr. Stutz was presented with a key to the city from Timothy P. Murray, Mayor of Worcester and Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor–elect (pictured at left). She also received citations from the Massachusetts House of Representatives, the Assumption College Board of Trustees, The Carnegie Foundation, and CASE.
Dr. Stutz commented that the biggest influence in her life was her parents. “My love of learning came from my parents who were avid readers,” she said. “I am very thankful for all of the educational opportunities I have had during my career. Teaching is truly my life’s work and my favorite part of the day is when I’m in the classroom.”
Jaclyn Carriveau ’07, an English major with a concentration in Education, eloquently described the role that Dr. Stutz has played in her life as a teacher and mentor. “She is an educator in every sense of the word—constantly challenging her students to work to the fullest of their potential, yet at the same time only being satisfied with their work if she feels they learned something worthwhile,” said Carriveau. “Not only is she the kind of professor I wish to emulate, she is also the kind of woman I hope to become. She is funny, wordly, and speaks in a way that leaves you full of understanding and wondrous curiosity to learn more. She has inspired me with determination, persistence, ability, and confidence that I can begin my first year of teaching fully prepared, and with the same excitement I felt that first day in her class,” she said.
The chairperson for Assumption’s Department of Education, Dr Stutz’s commitment to the study of teaching and her continuous passion to help her students be the best teachers they can be, have earned her praise and respect on campus. A member of the faculty since 1995, she earned a B.A. and an M.S. from the University of Pennsylvania and an Ed.D. from Boston University.
