Assumption to Offer Strathnaver Archaeology Project
March, 2006 - For the third consecutive year, Assumption College will be offering students an opportunity to participate in the Strathnaver Archaeology Project, a summer field school in the far north of Scotland.
The Strathnaver Province Archaeology Project is a five-year collaborative project directed by Assumption’s Dr. Amy Gazin-Schwartz and Dr. Olivia Lelong of Glasgow University. The goal of the project is to understand medieval settlement in Strathnaver, located in northern Scotland.
Students will participate in a collaborative research project, involving students and staff from Assumption, the University of Glasgow, and other universities in the U.S. For the first two years the group excavated medieval structures near the village of Durness. In the summer of 2006 the group will survey deserted townships in Strathnaver (the valley of the river Naver), and conduct trial excavations to recover materials to date different structures on surveyed sites. The group will stay in well-equipped hostels in the villages of Tongue and Bettyhill.
The field school will be held from June 10–July 1, 2006. Assumption students can receive three credits through Continuing Education. Costs are tuition ($736, pending approval) and $1800, which covers travel within Scotland, room and board, field trips, materials, and equipment.
Space is limited and the deadline for applications is March 20. Anyone interested in joining the project should contact Dr. Amy Gazin-Schwartz for more information, and application forms.
