Shawl Display Inspires Love and Hope
February,
2005—Assumption College's Reach Out Center celebrated
the end of the highly successful "Comfort Shawl" project
with
a celebratory reception and display of 85 shawls knitted for area
residents suffering from long-term illnesses.
The Comfort Shawl project aimed to bring warmth and comfort to area
residents who suffer from the devastating effects of cancer, AIDS,
and other life-threatening diseases. More than 70 Assumption community
members lent their knitting skills to create beautiful handmade
shawls, which were placed on display in the South Atrium of the
Testa Science Center on February 5, 2005.
Assumption’s knitters were asked to choose a prayer, inspirational
quote, lyrics from a song, or a poem that would become part of their
shawl. Upon completion, they were asked to pin these words to the
shawl so that the recipient would be wrapped in both the physical
warmth of the knitted yarn and the loving thoughts that accompanied
it.
This event also featured an uplifting performance by the Worcester
choir Voices of Praise. Directed by James Scott, this choir represents
seven communities of faith. Voices of Praise have been performing
in the area for the past two years.
The final
total of 90 shawls was divided between patients at Visiting Nurse
Association, AIDS Project Worcester, Fallon Oncology Unit at Worcester
Medical Center, and the UMass Ambulatory Oncology Clinic.
