Assumption College Helps Build New Playground;
Gift is in Honor of 100th Anniversary

October, 2003- During the spring of 2003, Assumption College announced a donation of $40,000 to be given to the City of Worcester for the construction of Fairmount Park in the form of a new playground. This gift, which is part of the College’s 18-month Centennial Celebration, will be celebrated on the weekend of October 25 and 26, with the construction and dedication of the new playground.

On Saturday, October 25, 2003, the City of Worcester will construct the highly anticipated playground with the help of volunteers from Poet Hill Neighborhood Association, the Worcester Sheriff’s Department and Assumption College’s students, faculty and staff, among others. The day will begin at 8:00 a.m. and construction is expected to be completed by 3:00 p.m.

After the day of labor, the ribbon cutting and dedication of the playground will take place on Sunday, October 26, 2003 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Along with the ceremonial events, there will be a festival-like atmosphere with food, face painting, balloons, games and children’s storytelling to add to the celebration.

Dr. Thomas R. Plough, president of the College remarked on the gift by saying, “It was 50 years ago that the community of Worcester showed its support when the College was devastated by the tornado of 1953. Our Centennial Committee identified a playground as one way of saying thank you, as well as forming an extended partnership with the energetic leadership of the Poet Hill Neighborhood Association.”
