Assumption Hosts Series of Events on Palestinian Women
Worcester, MA -
Assumption College will host a series of three events entitled, "The Lives of Palestinian Women in a Time of War," on March 22 and March 26, 2006.
On Wednesday, March 22, Assumption will welcome Dr. Ibtisam Ibrahim (pictured at left), from the Center for Arab American Studies at the University of Michigan, Dearborn, who will present two lectures. Ibtisam, a Palestinian and a citizen of Israel, specializes in issues of gender, race, ethnic minorities, and development in the Middle East. Her current research includes a study of relations among Muslims in Dearborn, Michigan and the gendered nature of emigration of the Palestinian minority in Israel.
Ibrahim, will conduct a luncheon discussion entitled, "Palestinian Women Suicide Bombers: Are They Really Different?," at 11:30 a.m. in the Marriott Room of Taylor Dining Hall. The presentation will begin around 11:45 a.m. and all are invited to charge lunch to the Department of Sociology/Anthropology.
Ibrahim will also present a lecture entitled, "The Effect of War on Women," at 4:00 p.m. in the La Maison Francaise Auditorium. Her presentation will address how armed conflict exacerbates the deprivation of women's rights to life and livelihood. Special attention will be given to the experiences of women in the Middle East, particularly the impact of armed conflict on women's lives in Iraq and Palestine.
The final event in the series will be a screening of the film, Rana's Wedding on Monday, March 27 at 4:00 p.m. in the La Maison Francaise Auditorium. This film is the second installment in Assumption's Middle Eastern film series entitled "Envisioning Women's Lives: Stories from the Middle East." This film shows the Palestinian-Israeli conflict through the eyes of a young woman, Rana, who, with only 10 hours to marry, must negotiate her way around the roadblocks, soldiers, stone-throwers and others at check-points that separate her from her husband to be. Viewers get a powerful picture of how important parts of the lives of everyday people are made so enormously difficult by the ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel. This film is directed by Hany Abu-Assad and will be introduced by Dr. Linda Ammons, Assumption College, Anthropology Dept.
All three events are free and open to the public and are sponsored by the Department of Sociology/Anthropology and the Women's Studies Program.
