March,
2005—Elizabeth
J. Olds ’05 of Rutland, MA, a senior triple major
in Economics, Global Studies, and Geography, recently received the
2005 George A. Doyle Merit Scholarship Award for excellence in Economics
or Global Studies.
This award is given annually to a senior Economics major that, by
virtue of their academic success, potential, and overall college
success best symbolizes the ideals of the department and of Dr.
George Doyle, a longtime professor at Assumption College who started
the Economics and Global Studies program. The award is made possible
through contributions to the Doyle Scholarship Fund by department
staff, friends, and alumni, as well as Dr. Doyle himself.
Olds is an extremely accomplished student. An Assumption Milleret
Scholar and recipient of a Rutland Lion’s Head Scholarship,
she ranks in the top 20 of the senior class of 475 members with
a 3.84 GPA. She works as a tutor for economics and geography in
the College’s Academic Support Center, in addition to holding
an off-campus job in the accounting department of Columbia Technical
Services. On campus, she also volunteers her time to the Reach Out
Center’s “Book Buddies” program and serves as
a co-editor of the Heights yearbook’s Senior section. She
is also a graduate of Assumption’s Student Leadership Institute.
After graduation, Olds intends to pursue a graduate degree while
working in either an economic or environmental field. She has applied
for admission to Clark University’s graduate program in International
Development.
